Whenever I try pencilling something like that, it gets smudged and then torn to shreds.

I use a stump for smudging. It works quite well for blending and soft lines.

I like the shading, the kind of blotchiness in the skin is a nice touch too. Thought, it does kinda look like he has an odd number of teeth in his lower jaw.
