The highlights are casein paint. They're like acrylics, but you can re-wet them and soften them off with water.
I basically did everything wet-into-wet and softened edges with water before they completely dried to spread the pigment around more evenly. There was also a lot of blotting involved to keep things from bleeding into each other and making soup.

My mom bought me a TON (seriously, it must have been a ream or something) of this really thick-toothed watercolor paper a long time ago, so whenever I do watercolor I use it, but it does wet-on-wet really badly...the paper just gets soaked and you get that ugly grey blot for however long it takes to dry. :\ So I can't do nice soft things very much.

That's why I switched to illustration board. You can control drying time a lot better because the board soaks up the pigment. Of course, that has its own disadvantages too (like making corrections really difficult), but all in all I like it.
You should give it a try.

The last time I was in Santa Fe there was a 7-foot bronze sculpture of a bear with an arrow in his butt. The bear is stand over a little Indian boy (5 or 6 years old) and trying very hard to see the bow the kid is hiding behind his back.
This make me think of that sculpture.
Nice job

I doesn't look like that choke is bothering "DogBreath". In fact, he looks like he's enjoying it.
