Description ...Lifeblood thudding in the temples, heart thrashing against breatbone - to love, to die, to act, to live, to sacrifice. A carving with gentle hands, made with brutal strokes...

This was painted in two sittings.

I started painting this when I had started reading the Gormenghast trilogy - anyone who remembers one of the Carvers describing to Keda the carving he will make, will know what first moved me to pick up the brush here. A calm, but steady undertow, a pulse. I was alone with the books, absorbed in their world.

The second sitting happened at the end of the second book. The characters I'd loved were all dead, and I genuinely grieved for them - funny that, how we can feel so bereaved when people who were never real die. The turbulence in the picture comes from that sitting - from the violence this undertow can unleash, from the end result of everything that beat and bled and moved and struggled and needed and wanted and was deprived. The scroll of the dancers bloodstream that first unfurled in a leisurely, orderly manner becomes chaotic, the air became heavier - full of dark shapes, and the dance more violent.

"..the bright birds leave her, one by one..."

Oh, and you might see a reference to Oscar Wildes' "The Nightingale and the Rose" in the pattern of lifeblood...

It took me many months to finally work up the guts to post this - I know the composition is cluttered, and that this scan is terrible and the colours are muddy and further muddied by the unfaithful reproduction on the screen, and that this isn't how you are meant to paint with watercolour. I also know that the feeling in this is as strong as it is ineffable, and i guess I am afraid it might be incomprehensible to other people.

...but here goes, it was worth a try.

Watercolour, white ink, coldpress 300 gsm, sepia fineliner pen, terrible scanner. The colours are richer and more vivid IRL, but this was among the last things I scanned before my machine up-and-died on me, so forgive it. I'll post a better version when I can.

Full view, if you please.

all and any feedback, wether critical, analytical or purely emotional, or only vaguely relevant, is wholeheartedly welcomed, as usual.

more gormenghast themed pictures may well follow.

I am totally blown away by this. The flow, the intricacy, it's just incredible. There is so much emotion behind it.

"I will hack for you a symbol of my love. It will curve in flight. It will leap. It shall be of crimson and have hands as tender as flowers and feet that merge with the roughness of the earth, for it shall be its body that leaps. And it shall have eyes that see all things and be violet like the edge of the spring lightning, and upon the breast I shall carve your name - Keda, Keda, Keda - three times, for I am ill with love."

Beautiful

I love the dramatic nature of this piece and the background texture. Somehow every element is tied together beautifully and the subtle color scheme definitely worked to your advantage in that respect. Overall lovely work.

*smiles* thanks. It's rare that I don't bugger up when working in colour, so I'm glad to hear you think it works...

The way you worked the thorns into the red paisley pattern is great - it integrates the thorn and branch theme that comes out in other places in the drawing.

*smiles* thanks...the thorns just kind of flowed into the red-paisley design without much thinking on my part beyond wanting to work the nightingale into it, i guess, i didn't even realise it echoed anything else in the picture, but I'm glad you think it works.
I also intend to have a more thorough snoop through your gallery soon.

And no matter what went wrong with scanning or what ever else you feel has gone wrong for me it doesn't change the fact that I think it's an epic painting.

*smiles* thankyou... it hasn't been called "epic" before.
I guess it's just better in life - the colours are richer, especially the reds.

My attention was drawn primarily to the character, mainly the way you've texturised the body contours and the skin -realistic, nothing's smoothened out, or cartoonised, but the ill, mottled colour and texture doesn't tip over to the zombie squad either. Very skilled and effective use of lineart and painted shading in that department.

thanks very much for your thoughtful feedback.
With her skin, I had a sort of almost "cut from wood" feel in mind, but probably didn't succeed...In any case, i still wanted her to look human, imperfect.
I'm relatively new to colour and shading with any depth, so I'm glad it's not a total disaster in taht respect, either...

This is brilliant! Whatever you say about the scan, this one showcases your work at its best. It's a lot more involved than the rough sketches I've seen from you recently and your command of the media blows my mind.

To look at this is to get the impression you think and feel more deeply than most of the people I meet, and moreover have the means to express it. It also makes me question the worth of so much I've done recently.

I can relate to it because I've also been strongly affected by fictional works (though it's never happened with fantasy) and have also wondered how they could leave such a lasting impression. I guess that's what great art's about!

Wow...

The detail and gesture in this is just stunning. The mixed media used here really blend well together.

Fantastic work.

thanks - I have to confess, i was worried the detail would clutter the picture and overpower the gesture - it started out as a very simple, gestural drawing, and for a while i was afraid I'd lose the main direction of movement in all that turbulence. so I'm glad you still see the gesture.

Spuggy-Sparrow [2011-02-20 04:45:47 +0000 UTC]

Artistically, in the details of the blood, this is haunting and transfixing. The muddiness fits the blood and the branches, and doesn't seem to detract overly from your style. I'm curious as well to the patterns chosen for the blood and the white sigils curling out from her right shoulder. There is that strong... feel about the carvers in it all though... ah, and I just spied the nightingale...

Emotionally, for me... what can I say?

It's beautiful.
