Description This is my first colored pencil tutorial for Prismacolor brand pencils.
You will need:
Prismacolor colored pencils ([link] )
Colorless blending pencil
Bristol or heavyweight sketch paper
*light table optional

Intro:
This tutorial is for Prismacolor brand colored pencils created in an attempt
to share my personal technique and use of this media. It is for learning
purposes only and may best benefit those with some experience with using
colored pencils. There are several scans below that were made as I colored
a past badge commission. Each will be arranged below in order with a paragraph
to explain what was being done at that stage.
If you find this tutorial helpful and feel it may be useful to others, please add it
to your favorites. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to add them
via comment below the deviation.

What are Prismacolor pencils?

Prismacolor is a brand name just as Crayola and RoseArt are. I was introduced to Prismacolor
markers and colored pencils during college and prefer to use them over other brands due to
the softness of the pencil and its high blending ability. There are several pros and cons to
Prismacolors; While the colors are very rich and blend best with a colorless blending pencil,
you may be aware that this brand is also very expensive and if too much pressure is applied
the tips can break easily during use. I feel that if taken care of like any variety of art tool,
a set of Prismacolor pencils can last many years under average use.

It does...and I have noticed that you do not color your inked'penciled sketches but instead make traces from them. That is really nice and different. We never really see anyone doing that.

^^ I think these secrets are ok to give out, there's gotta be atleast one person out there who has done theirs this way. There's just one secret I can't give out with the tutorial, and that's actually doing the strokes.

With the light table you use does it shine bright enough for you to see through heavy weight paper, like smooth bristol? I'm looking in to getting one but I'm not willing to pay like $50 for one that doesn't shine bright enough.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

guyver47 In reply to AirRaiser [2006-09-07 15:20:30 +0000 UTC]

well I didn't have a sheet of bristol to test it out on but I put a sketch onto my light table and layered as many sheets as I could before I couldn't see the sketch easily. I used the paper I do my badges on, which is heavyweight but not as heavy as bristol. I can layer about 6 sheets of my paper on it before I couldn't see the sketch anymore, roughly 3cm thick. I'm going to say that from memory, I did use bristol over a sketch on my light table and had no trouble with it, so I am 98% sure any light table will be able to shine through smooth bristol. I should probably pick up a pad of that anyways 8D

Thanks so much for this, Guyver! I've been putting off coloring a few things lately, but this has really inspired me to try a new technique. I bought a handful of those blender pencils about a year ago and hardly ever use them, but I'm gonna go try them out and see what comes of it :3

Thanks again! Hope you're having a good time in NY.

I've tryed it today... I haven't prismacolors (i have to go out with my actual ones before... it has no sense to trash pencils only because the mark isn't Prismacolor )... but anyway i've seen something changed on the picture... seems more "shiny"...

Thank you Your artwork doesn't look like crap, but I put in 5 or 6 hours minimum into these badges so I guess patience is a big part of it for me. Oh the headaches I get sometimes XD XD
I think I paid $20 for the table - I think.

Yeah, the price is pretty high but I'm still using my first set from 3 years ago so you don't have to worry about the price versus quality. You may even ask your family to all go in on a set for you for Christmas, 7 people throw in 10 bucks per person or offer some commission specials

Idess In reply to ??? [2006-08-08 09:37:38 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely amazing. You know how much of a fan I am of your work n.n And this will come in SO much help, seeing as I am trying to go more into real media using my prisma's.
Question though.. I have a colorless blender and I never seemed to get much out of them. How exactly do you blend the color? Like, hard srokes or soft ones, or perhaps in circles or going with the fur direction? Its possible I'm just pressing too hard or something... XD

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

guyver47 In reply to Idess [2006-08-10 03:02:54 +0000 UTC]

Thank you
I figured some people would like to see how I do it, to get rid of some of the mystery. And since I'm not a very good one on one teacher online, this might be better
I don't do hard rapid strokes (that sounds bad ), I kinda do average pressure rubbing with the pencil to blend it. Circular I believe for large "flat" areas and if it's fur, I try to follow the curve of the fur. I don't usually lift the pencil off the paper unless I'm doing an area like the hair where I don't want to smudge the thin details too much. A flat area for example would be the cheek and shoulder area on the badge in the tutorial.
If I can, I might try to create a low res and small sized video showing the strokes
but nonethless, I hope you have fun with the tutorial ^^

*took lots of time to read carefully* man, so detailed! I don't think I have a set way to work, actually I think I color a different way every time, which probably isn't good, but if I went more by this I think I could do a lot, lot better. I think this will help a lot of people if they take the time to properly follow the steps.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

guyver47 In reply to Blattaphile [2006-08-10 01:11:16 +0000 UTC]

It took me a couple of hours to write all of that, and then I had my bf look it over from a fresh perspective (he hasn't used them before). I don't believe coloring a different way everytime is generally a bad thing. Switching up your routine is good, unless your aim was to learn through repetition.
I just figured my tutorial can show others how I do it, and they may like to work the way I do and hey, they may even throw in their own extra spice. Now when it comes to digital coloring...I start into it differently every time XD
