Description
This image came into my head on the way home, so I thought I'd try a speed painting of it.Oil on canvas paper, 2 hours' work, no references or image prep (sorry about that, I know it shows.)
Inspired by reading too much of Amano's 'Hero'... lately my dreams have been filled with strange houses and demonic horsemen!

Thank you it was great fun to paint.

for a wet in wet production, the detail is fantastic and as for the hip, maybe he's just super flexy?
The colours are excellent contrasts.
It does have a wonderfully evocative Vlad the Impaler style - hope your week is improving, what kind of chocolate do you want sending in your 'keep Hareguizer happy' package?

Yes, he must be half snake.
Oddly, painting corpses and demons has made me feel better for some reason. Oh, and finding the lost Douglas Adams Dr Who adventure 'Shada' on Radio 7!

Nice result. It actually reminds me of an FF knight or something. Whenever I get something in my head, the actual one turns out to be totally different than what I try to do.

The helmet is pure Amano, which might be why it looks FFish, he did a lot of concept work for the series.

I know, kind of sad that he isn't doing the artwork for the games anymore. I don't really like the zipper/chain style thing they have going on now. I think his last game was FFX.

Good point, Square have really gone for the zippers in recent years, haven't they? And more coming with FFXIII too.

And the girliness in the men that are supposed to be skilled fighters, best of the best, it isn't really helping much either... I could see it in concept art before, but now it's getting out of hand being in the actual game models...

I think it's because the games with mature masculine heroes as the lead didn't do very well. They sort of gave up on that after Vagrant Story and opted for younger, more effete leads. And so the cliche was born!
Also, when you have guns you don't need big muscles.

True.
But, then again, it's nice to have big muscles when you're holding a gun, it adds to that intimidating look you're going for. Like that guy in the Run Down, or whatever that movie's called.

Heh, I saw 'Shoot 'em Up' on the weekend, which sort of said the same thing.
But what about the 'beautiful babes with really big guns' cliche? They don't really work with the big muscles.

Unm. As someone who drew a katana-wielding WEREWOLF, it just occurred to me I'm in no position to comment!
So this is me agreeing with you. :shamefaced:
Though I still reserve the right to laugh at Cloud waving round a sword that looks both bigger and heavier than he is.

It's a fantastic piece - I'm really glad you managed to get your idea onto the canvas - any time I get an image into my head I can never get it as I want it as a final piece

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say it's how I want it. But it's a useful sketch if I ever decide to do it properly.

There are some anatomical errors and the horse is a bit smaller than I pictured it. But overall the feel of it is about right.

Glad you like it! Yeah, I just played on the themes 'Flames, death and carnage' - it's been that kind of week.
There are some dead bodies in the foreground, but my scanner didn't pick the detail up very well. Which is probably a mercy.

If you squint you should be able to see the one on the far left, it has a broken spear rammed through its chest and its ribs are silhouetted.
Yay gore.

Mmmm, flames!
When I was wondering whether to do this in acrylics or oils the background decided it for me. I wanted it to be soft and hazy, and it's so warm at the moment I wasn't sure the acrylics would stay wet long enough to blend. I might try this one for real in acrylics and see what I make of the background. I can sort out the anatomy too then.

the background is quite fine indeed, just have to see how it turns out if redone, acrylics are a pain to blend
