Living in the tropical waters far off the coast east of Equestria mermaids watch over their part of the ocean. Guiding lost ships and protecting them from the dangers of the ocean. Despite their delicate looks mermaids are capable fighters and using teamwork and expert coordination to defeat their foes.

Despite being we known to the world they rarely show them selves to those they protect. And they never bring outsiders to their underwater city unless the visitor is truly someone of great stature.

They have a decent relationship with the sea-ponies, also known as Kelpie. Trading and often forking together to deal with problems that plague the oceans.

Mermaids can be somewhat vain in their appearance, always finding different ways to make their scales stand out and wearing shells and gems as accessories.

As their Race is 70% female the females dominate almost every aspect of their society. From government to trading. Males being naturally stronger make up the bulk of their armed forces, as such it is rare to find males who are not in the military or doing manual labor while females handle politics and economics.

While most mermaids abide by the rules and regulations of the sea, there are small bands of pirates that patrol the sea, raiding lost ships. Busting open the cargo holds from underwater and plundering the ship once it sinks. They rarely go after the actual sailors on the ship as they must quickly take what they can before mermaid rescue teams come for the ship-wrecked crew.
