12 x 18 Oil on PaperFantasy Flight Games recently revealed this alternate card art I did as a prize for the Star Wars: Armada World Championships! I don't often find myself painting Vader without his lightsaber, but focusing on his military prowess was a fun thematic departure.

Kind of incidental, but that nebula is painted nicely. Less incidentally, the swirling of these ethereal tones gives some dynamism to the pose!

I often see a connection between Darth Vader and my late stepfather, whose name I do not wish to bring up. They were both cold, heartless monsters. The only difference: My stepfather didn't have the suit, the helmet, or the asthma. *Zing!*

Cool artwork! You used oil on paper? Do you also use watercolor or mixed media?

Thanks! Yes it's oil on paper, but the paper is sealed with a layer of clear acrylic matte medium (otherwise, the paper would absorb the oil and eventually degrade). I sometimes use gouache but not much watercolor, and I've not been one to do too much media mixing. Guess I'm just a purist hahaha.

Cool! I tend to mix a lot my mediums in my drawings of manga. I very often use alcohol based markers such as Copics and Touch, watercolor and color pencils. Sometimes I add a small amount of acrylic. I mainly used mixed media papers. But I've also done some paintings with acrylic during some activities in groups and I've noticed that it's sometimes easier to blend colors with acrylic than with watercolors or alcohol based markers.

Question- After the oils dry, won't it crack with slight bend? And it'll still stick to paper?
Oils is on medium I've yet to learn to use.... am experimenting with Acrylics at the moment.

The paper is mounted to a stiff board of masonite, so it doesn't bend. Also, the paper has been sealed with a clear acrylic matte medium in order to keep the oils in the paint from penetrating into it, causing it to degrade over time. The biggest benefit to this method is that I can do my preliminary drawing digitally, print it out (on a good archival paper), and paint directly on top of it. It sure beats having to transfer the drawing with a grid or projector.
