Hey Jen, I'm wondering if you use the blur tool at all for blending the main darks and lights of the wolf? Not the when you're doing the fur, just the first few steps.

jocarra In reply to Yoshark [2007-12-22 20:22:34 +0000 UTC]
I never blur during the preliminary blocking/shading of a character. The only time I'll blur is very occasionally when dealing with details, depending on what exact kind of details I'm doing and what I need it to look like.

Thanks! My picture is well on its way to completion, but it wouldn't be possible without this tutorial. It has taught me a lot, and I'm extremely grateful that you have taken the time to craft and make it. Thank you.

I have a question
On step 4, how do you start to airbrush? I dont know how.....and wheres the button pressure? I dont get how to turn the blocks of colors to smooth colors.... How?????

jocarra In reply to Ikebanna [2007-12-12 22:10:59 +0000 UTC]
The pressure/flow and opacity settings should be up along the top bar. Pressure/flow should be set to a very low number, like 1-5% - this means the colour will flow out really slowly, giving you lots of control. Opacity should be set to 100%, meaning that the maximum colour that you can lay on is 100% opaque.
Your picture should look something like the small, far left picture. Using your airbrush with a dark colour, paint in the areas I've shown with the blocks, and it will automatically turn into smooth colours. You don't actually paint the blocks first and then blend. You blend as you paint, because the colour flows out so slowly. Then you do the same thing with a lighter colour.

*chuckles* Thank you very much...
You don't absolutely need a tablet to paint well... but it helps. And yes, most tablets cost about that much, or much much much much more.

Well, my mouse is horrible, plus I really can't draw stuff with a mouse to save my life even though I'm good with a pencil and paper X_X

Awww, d'oh. True, you can't draw with a mouse, but you can paint. Instead of focusing on lines, focus on shapes and shades.

Do you think this would be ok?

Do they mean 4x5 inches? Is that a bit small? Cuz I'm not spending that much on a tablet.

jocarra In reply to Kaleesh-of-Kalee [2007-11-11 00:07:19 +0000 UTC]
Yes, 4x5 is small. That's the size I use, because it's the cheapest. However, I have the next model up, which is Intuos. Graphire, I believe, is their cheapest.

So... when you are looking at a better one, what exactly is better about it? The quality of the image?

jocarra In reply to Kaleesh-of-Kalee [2007-11-11 00:42:04 +0000 UTC]
Resolution, yes, in part. But also how pressure sensitive it is - the more it works like a real pen/brush, the better. Then there are added features, like software and such...

Nah, it's not aggravating at all. I don't mind helping people or giving them feedback. I just don't like being spammed, and thankfully it doesn't happen all that often.
Yes, it's nice to know that other people enjoy my work

GREAT tutorial..just one question..how do I separate the wolf from the background to redo the background? I cant figure that out..
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
jocarra In reply to NatashaMB [2007-10-16 03:02:25 +0000 UTC]
Originally, if you haven't painted the wolf and background on SEPARATE layers, then there is no way to separate them. You'll have to go around and carefully erase about the wolf.
