Description Yep, I'm telling everyone how I made the wolves in Wolf Mates II - haha, maybe I shouldn't... but I'm going to, anyways. It's shockingly simple - anyone can do it!

Hope it makes sense, and that it's useful... and that I'll get to see lots of furry things in the near future

That's pretty good You've made the fur look like fur, making it look different from smoother textures, but without making it look so different as out of place and not matching the rest of the style. Good job.

This is amazing, but still to complicated for me xD First step is to actually /draw/ the wolves well. When I was a bit younger they looked nicer, probably because I wasn't as sure how wolves looked, but I might want to get that down, and come back to this! ^-^

jocarra In reply to JamesBondForever [2008-01-11 05:59:25 +0000 UTC]

The first step is easy - just look at a photo. How can an artist be expected to draw something if he doesn't know what it looks like? Looking at a reference is the way to drawing something right.

I know what they look like *Coughs* I've pet wolves in real life before ^-^ Very /very/ fun time! Even when I look at examples it doesn't seem to work =-/ *Shrugs*

jocarra In reply to JamesBondForever [2008-01-12 07:19:39 +0000 UTC]

I wasn't trying to say you don't know what they look like - I was just trying to make a point that it's GOOD for an artist to look at something in order to paint it well. But yeah, I don't know what to suggest with regards to when you actually do look - do you take your time? Sometimes it can take a good while before art starts looking "right" even with just a sketch.

Gawd, I tried this with high hopes because it looked so easy . . . and then I completely and utterly face-planted. ;___; --> [the horror]

It looked good up until I started smudging things, and then it totally died... Only bothered to smudge his face and neck and a few other places before giving up. Maybe next time you could make an easier tutorial? Or maybe I just suck too much. T_______T;;; Fur = supah hard.

jocarra In reply to aspenfallen [2007-11-24 19:50:06 +0000 UTC]

Hmm... This is about the easiest tutorial there is to make. The problem with painting and drawing is that its really made up of very simple executions. To draw lineart for a face, it's just a few curves and bumps and lines, but not everyone can do it, obviously, even though instructions may be horribly simple.

If what I describe in the tutorial doesn't work quite right for you, then don't follow it! :3 Use the tutorial as a rough guide for your own work - use things that work for you, and discard the things that don't seem to work for you, and use it to find your own technique that comes out right

But yeah. You have to smudge discriminately. If you do a really good job at the "scribbling" stuff, then you don't have to do much smudging at all, and some kinds of fur looks require different kinds of scribbling, so you can't treat all animal fur and all parts of an animal the same way.

My best advice would be to work from a photo of a real animal, and just practice copying it. Try airbrushing instead of blocking, or try all scribbling and no smudging, or any different combination. But working from a photo is best, because you can very clearly see what you're aiming for in appearances. If, by smudging, you make the painting look LESS like the photo, then don't do it!

However, keep in mind that art tends to evolve. Stuff doesn't always look good right away. Just take a look at all my WIPs.

aspenfallen In reply to jocarra [2007-11-28 21:56:48 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for the advice. My hardest difficulty is finding my own style since I haven't been able to develop one since forever even though I've been trying so long. Hm. In time I'll try working with wolves again and see if I do better. Once again, thanks for the pointers.

Really good tutorial. too bad oekakis doesn't have so much tools (at least not Shipainter and I can't use Oekaki BBS)

But I'll try in PhotoShop ^^

jocarra In reply to Aozame-san [2007-08-26 18:36:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you :3

You should be able to apply this technique to oekaki, as well. You don't absolutely need a smudge tool - it just means you have to be more careful with your smudging. "Get it right the first time" so you don't have to use any smudging.
