Description
This tutorial covers my basic process from sketch to final product, and how I do textures in graphite. This was a tough tutorial to make - I can see why there isn't a "traditional" section for tutorials. Hope it's somewhat useful.Related content

Have you ever used subdermic lightings?

The finished product of this tutorial has been the background on my computer for quite some time now... and I must say, It never ceases to impress me on how much detail I see in it every time (especially when my computer goes UBER slow and the only thing I can do is stare at my computer for a few minutes)
so yea, great job!! ^_^
oh, btw, how long did it take you to learn the anatomy of a wolf? because before I try to draw, paint, etc., fur I need to keep practicing drawing wolves.

jocarra In reply to itsNateKelly [2009-03-09 22:00:18 +0000 UTC]
It's taken me a little while, but I kind of started off with just plain dogs before wolves, as I did a few doggie portraits for my family and friends. And then I did this for my boyfriend. Dogs and wolves, especially medium-large dogs, have more wolfy features and similar anatomy, so if you have any dogs around the house, they may be great practice to start familiarizing yourself with
That, and I often use photo references to help. If I'm having problems getting something to look right, especially. Even if the photos aren't at the right angle or of the right coloured wolf, or whathaveyou, photo references are the most useful tools for nailing anatomy and form, period. It doesn't matter what you're drawing. You NEED references if you're going to learn how to draw it properly.
So straight copying is extremely good practice, even if it's not smiled upon by all "artists" (I use "" because most professionally trained artists will tell you copying is absolutely necessary, while generally only self-taught or amateur artists will argue copying is always wrong.)

yea, references are very handy... So I have to rely on the zoo for wolf pictures (and even then the chain fence annoys me ^_^' )
but thanks for the tips!

I drew this image before seeing this tutorial ... and it shows.
[link] (the reason why one of them looks so radically different is because I only had half of the image.)

Heh, I don't think it turned out badly It's nice :3
And yeah, I used only a small cropped photo for a reference, which is why it's a little different from other drawings made from the same picture.

This tutorial should help me out a lot. ^^ I've been trying to figure out how to use those pencils forever. xD Well, about two years, but it feels like forever. xD Still, patience is a key in art. So, thank you for the wonderful tutorial!

nice tutorial. how do i keep my hand from rubbing against the paper? i have that problem and the pic gets dirty :S
π: 0 β©: 2
artguy2133 In reply to SuperVegito12345 [2009-09-18 17:54:39 +0000 UTC]
I use a cloth jersey glove with the first, second, and thumb fingers cut out. I am still careful not to drag my hand across the picture, but it helps to keep the oils from my hand off of it.

jocarra In reply to SuperVegito12345 [2008-08-28 23:50:44 +0000 UTC]
You can either put another piece of paper between your wrist and the image, or make sure to never slide your wrist across the surface of the paper (only place it, pick it up, place it carefully, etc). Or you can be careful enough to never let it touch at all.
What I do is (right-handed) work left to right, so my wrist is always resting on a part of the image that hasn't really been worked on yet. Nothing to smudge if you work this way.

Great work, your tutorial. Maybe a good way for some people to find their way into the wonderful world of art.
This reference picture is quite famous, it seems to. Both me and raipun have done a painted version. Maybe you want to have a look? [link] (mine)
[link] (raipunΒ΄s - loads better in details, itΒ΄s really cool)
ItΒ΄s so fascinating how the techniques differ and what character the pictures gain through the choice of the colours.
