Description This tutorial covers my basic process from sketch to final product, and how I do textures in graphite. This was a tough tutorial to make - I can see why there isn't a "traditional" section for tutorials. Hope it's somewhat useful.

I would began by saying how well this tutorial spells things out, and how good it is but um...

Argh... seems to be 100 tutorial where same things are said over again... and no use.
It would mean so much to me if i could find your (and other) tutorial(s) helpful, but i cant...

*sigh* and fave.

AnuOjat In reply to jocarra [2007-06-26 11:40:43 +0000 UTC]

Another side of my other comment...

Because when i see great work (like this) it captures me and frustration of my 'not as good' comes and tkes down my concentration on it.

And i cant stop myself from hating the words:
"learn" "practice" and "try out" because they make me feel, lesser person and weak.

...nobody ever tells how to make the form correct.
AND i when i try to think of ideas which obiviously level up an art skill and power up the willingness to go for it, MY MIND COMES UP WITH EVERY POSSIBLE NEGATIVE ENDINGS AND FAILURES AND EXCUSES TO FALL MY IDEA APART.

...plus it seems as if though someone has carved the words 'yhinking is weak!' in my head.
I want to draw and write! And be creative and full of ideas but that flood of pessimistic emtotion always takes me over and idea that someone might tease/insult me is a factor of fear also!
(I was constantly, every hour, teased in my life as a child.)

jocarra In reply to AnuOjat [2007-06-26 20:36:26 +0000 UTC]

I can sort of understand that, but it's being unreasonable to expect perfection without effort.

What do you mean, how to make the form correct? There's only so much one can teach when speaking in general to everyone about general techniques.

It sounds like you need to learn to control that negative part of you. I have it, too, and it's harmful to let it control you.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AnuOjat In reply to jocarra [2007-06-27 15:34:00 +0000 UTC]

The form... the spape of that which i draw doesnt come right, it always is flat and faint as if though a smudge without fine lines. It maybe has something to do with pencils i use... they dont allow fine lines, just mess when i draw.

When i draw, i have "nothing" in my head an it comes out poor. When i think of an idea it works but same time i feel weak for thinking.

How does one control it then? ...i would have no idea.

You could look at my gallery, and see what i mean... it is so clear in my pics.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jocarra In reply to AnuOjat [2007-06-30 05:08:11 +0000 UTC]

Well, the smudgy lines are great for sketching, actually. Help you "see" the form before it's fully there yet. You should do final outlines with a mechanical pencil or a nice art pen.

How do I control it? I realise that I'm being hard on myself and am unhappy, but then I remind myself that getting too upset won't help me get better. I try to learn from my mistakes, and keep practicing. Acknowledge the problem, and work with yourself, not against yourself.

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

AnuOjat In reply to jocarra [2007-06-30 18:13:01 +0000 UTC]

That... being said, i think i understand what you mean. I am different when with myself yet still the same, and so different from others and almost friendless... because i differ from others. Although i know there are no "normal" people.
'ahem'
I am sorry to put you in the position of a teacher, i mean it. Sorry. Loneliness and being (almost) alone entire life isint really good inspiration.

But iยดll leave that behind, since you got me inspired by talking and helping with art. I cant thank you enough.

Okay, you rock. So much.

I almost don't want to draw anymore when I see how good you are - I suck! lol! I'll have to go to the art store and buy some stuff, up to now I've been using a regular writing pencil and a big white vinyl eraser haha. I absolutely love wolves, as I said in my other comment to you, and the next time I draw one I'll have to really try this...I never really draw anything for more than an hour or half or so (doesn't take much to make sucky drawings ), If I had the materials and took more time I might be a little better

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jocarra In reply to failing-at-flight [2007-01-07 09:02:33 +0000 UTC]

Aww! Thank you very much!

And don't give up :b There will always be someone better... but there will always be someone worse.

Yes. Good materials, and more time, and more practice... All these equate to improvement

I've mostly been doing digital and anime but I want to expand into more traditional mediums and realism styles and your tutorial was a great help for that! If found it easy to follow even with my very limited knowledge. Thank you very much for posting this tutorial ^^ Your graphite skills are amazing.

very good. I personally would struggle to make a tutorial on my drawing style. It is helpful to have these sorts of things! I'm not sure if I would ever make a tutorial on the way I do things, digitally or traditionally, because I think it would be better for people to find their own style. really informative this one is!

YoukaiBabe In reply to ??? [2006-08-27 03:50:14 +0000 UTC]

wow this is a GREAT tutorial. and your drawing is amazing! I did my first wolf piece ever today and i guess i set my expectations too high because i am incredibly dissapointed with it lol (this was before i looked at your tutorial) I have two questions for you!

1) My brother managed to loose my kneadable eraser and I am not able to get to the store any time soon. Does it play big part in drawing a wolf?

2) How do you do the fur so well and defined without it looking like random pencil strokes?

๐Ÿ‘: 0 โฉ: 1

jocarra In reply to YoukaiBabe [2006-08-27 18:46:08 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much :3 I'm glad you enjoyed it.

1) Yes, kneadable eraser plays a big part in drawing graphite for me, period. An eraser is as an essential tool as a pencil, almost. It lets you define the negative space of a picture, as well as negative details. You could do a large region of grey, and then use the kneadable to scratch little fur marks into it, rather than use a pencil, which always seems to turn out so harsh.

2) I get the fur well-defined without looking like random pencil strokes because I don't use random pencil strokes. I use the layering method that I describe here, and I gradually create more detailed areas of dark and light. I don't start making detailed fur strokes with the pencil until the very end, when the shape and shading is already there.
