Description
This tutorial covers my basic process from sketch to final product, and how I do textures in graphite. This was a tough tutorial to make - I can see why there isn't a "traditional" section for tutorials. Hope it's somewhat useful.Related content

Do I have any tips on using a kneadable? Don't rub with it - dab and lift. And make sure you make it into an appropriate shape, first.

Awesome tutorial, I've never really used erasers before to help with highlighting and I always have trouble with hair and stuff. This is really useful and your art is something else!!!

Thank you very much :3 I hope it really comes in useful.
And yes, the eraser is an essential tool for me when doing graphite. It's as important as my pencils...

Hey! You again!!! I am happy you answered. I mean, if you look at my last post, attention.([link] ), you will see some shading errors. It is only graphite at canson paper. I have an old white and useful eraser, but it got dirt, so i didnΒ΄t used it. So i was looking for a tutorial or something about graphite, something i love so much!!! I resolvd to do these kind of pics inspired by mss larsson, ailah. And them i found your lovely tutorial! I thank you so much! If i study it well, i may drwon that doubts. I am an baginnig in arts, i started on the very end of last year. I seldomly see a experienced artist share their expereince and talk to someone in the beginnig of the way! It more your great artwork induced mew to watch you!
My doubts are generaly about fur sense, light/shadow. Otherwise, all i need is some experience and and mediums. I will learn to use acrylics, soon! Sorry for the book i just typed, i am excited with your disposition! It is not like that artists that donΒ΄t care about you^-^! Well, so this is it. !

VulpesPolaris In reply to jocarra [2006-05-02 14:36:51 +0000 UTC]
Thank you for that! Glad you think so!
Well, first of all, my main doubts are focused on the fur, and how to duplicate better the photo/drawing itself... For the second, i think it is only practice, but the first, i have problems. I have studied ailahΒ΄s art(Scarlet Conjurer.) trying to see what see does in the fur, but i am having difficulties with it. It is being difficult to learn alone.

It takes a lot of time and practice and observation. I learned on my own, too.

... Oh. My time is very short, something i think is common to we all. But i have a lot of will, and i will keep trainnig! And we donΒ΄t stop to learn, and thus we can become good, better, and even better! Yes, this is the point. Train. Zeal!!!

My god yes. I've never had any proper, how-to-draw-people training, or really anythig in particular training-except 3 classes on the human face as part of my school "art" class. and that was the very basics. (ex: eyes are halfway down the face, not two inches away from the top of the head) this is very good. would youdo something similar for clothes, too? those are HARD.

jocarra In reply to Kirakira-Tenshi [2005-11-20 17:51:13 +0000 UTC]
*chuckles* I'm horrible at clothes X3 Try searching dA for clothes tutorials - there are some good ones. My best suggestion is to use references. If you're trying to see what it looks like when someone wearing a short-sleeved t-shirt is waving, try putting a t-shirt on and wave at yourself in the mirror. Take a look at where the folds are. Then use strips of shading to render them.
And if it means anything, I have had limited art training: I took a painting course in Grade 12, and a life-drawing course in university, but neither really discussed HOW TO DRAW. It was just really good practice and helped me figure out what worked for me.

*laughs* thanks. good advie with the wear -the-clothes-yourself bit, but somehow.... the clthes in my gllery wouldn't be purchase in a conventional store.
and if you had no conventional art training, there is hope for us all.

jocarra In reply to Kirakira-Tenshi [2005-11-21 13:50:03 +0000 UTC]
Well, the clothes you wear don't have to exactly match what is being worn by the character. You can emulate a cape with a towel, you can see how (shoot, forget the name of those things you tie around your front or button up, found in women - insert name here) look when fitted tightly by wearing a shirt and pulled it tight around your middle, and you can always mix and match. If you're wanting to draw a shirt with flared arms, for instance, but don't have such a garment, use a long-sleeved t-shirt to reference one part of it, and then draw something loose around your arm to reference the second part of it.
... or, y'know, you could just try to find something online X3

Awww! That sounds wonderfully cute ^_^ I love cuddly cats... it's the snooty temperamental ones I don't like so much My friend's cat is like that - if you try to pet him "when he's not in the mood" he'll tear a hole in your arm.
