Description
This tutorial covers my basic process from sketch to final product, and how I do textures in graphite. This was a tough tutorial to make - I can see why there isn't a "traditional" section for tutorials. Hope it's somewhat useful.Related content

oh my.... I don't think I've ever mat a cat like that, ever! or at least, not one that acted that way around me; I'm extremely popular with small furry things.

Mmm, our cat used to be like that, too (he belonged to my sister) - very mean and temperamental, and he used to scratch me when I tried to pet him. She left him with us when she moved away, after a little kindness and a little training, he became very friendly and nice ^_^
It must be the owners... My sister's boyfriend used to tease the cat all the time, and my sister had a really big annoying dog (I like dogs, but I have to admit, this one was really annoying) so I guess he learned to be mean. And the mean cat of my friend's? Well, my friend lets his cats do whatever they like, including scratch guests and be mean, so one of his cats learned to be very aggressive and controlling.

See, my problem is, I'm not the one to be patient. I can hardly spend over two hours on one picture. And, if I do, I'm so bad at drawing that it will end up sucky anyway.

Awww Well, that's why you don't try to finish a picture all in one sitting. Doodle on it for a bit, then come back to it a few days later! That's what I do... Sometimes it'll take me a year just to finish one picture X3

Well, with me, I'll start a picture because I'm in a certain mood, or because I've been miraculously inspired to do so. Then, when I try to come back to finish it, I've found I am no longer interested in it. It sucks. xD

Wonderful tutorial Your tips were very helpful; hopefully I'll be able to implemend them
Small question; how would you go about a longhaired white dog? (A Maltese, for example) Up till now, I've been cheating with Painter, using a black background U_U But I want to be able to do it with pencils as well
Lovely work, keep it up

Awesome! I'm glad you found it helpful Hmm... Long-haired white dog? Well, what I find helpful, is try to get yourself a black and white version of your reference, so you can better see your range of greys without any confusing colours to screw you up. If you can, take it into a program like PhotoShop, and play with the level settings until you get a nice brightness/contrast setting you like, and use that to draw from. Then just use the same process - lightly rough in the darker areas, and then gradually deepen the tones until you get it right. For texture, I'd use a kneadable and a hard-edged eraser. I have this awesome little saucer-shaped eraser - find one with a good sharp edge that holds its shape, and use it for pulling out fur texture.

Thank you so much I'll try that for sure. Then I'll buy a sharp-edged eraser tomorrow, sounds like I need it
Thank you again

...Eraser poop! *cracks up*
Sweet! I've learned something from this.. and that's good! I'm always learning, trying new stuff, ditching old habits and the like. Mostly, I'm just trying to get back into real media after working only in digital for.. a very long time. ;.; I think I'll have to use some of your tips. I'm working on a pencil-piece right now, I shall have to impliment some of your techniques.
And of course.... watch out for that eraser poop.

What leads do you use for you diffrent shaded areas?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
jocarra In reply to bluepaw [2005-05-05 19:46:57 +0000 UTC]
Generally speaking:
For the lightest regions, I use HB.
For the middle-light regions, I use HB+3B.
For the middle-dark regions, I use HB+3B+5B.
For the darkest regions, I use HB+3B+5B+6B, often with mechanical pencil to get sharp edges and details.
I use the middle two combinations the most, building up as I explain in my graphite tutorial, with mechanical pencil for sharp edges and details.

Thanks you Yeah, but I liked having a record of my progress - it's kind of fun to go back and see how things came along. That, and it's also useful for showing other people how humble a finished picture looked when you first started it, and for things like tutorials, apparently
