If you're using photoshop, what brush should you use to make the pixels? I can't seem to find any brushes that make a solid square.

Each icon on PS has a small white triangle in the lower right corner. In the brush icon, push it twice while leaving a pressure and a menu should push down with the remaining brushes. You will find the pixel one as the second brush.

This is a nice tutorial. One thing I'd add. GIF is the best method for saving pixel art (I'm talking about saving it at original size, where you have full access to the palette).
PNG would be useful only if your pixel art uses more than 256 colours (very hard to achieve on full fledged pixel art), or is huge in dimensions. I'm talking about images of the size 2048x2048 constructed with many relatively small and different pieces and very few large areas of the same colour.
JPEG is good for previews, but indeed useless for pixel art.
Sorry for long comment

Thank you for this valuable information. I base my theories from my experiments so I guess I'm still learning new stuff from pixelart!

No problems, I just hope I didn't appear as a sort of pixel-art-nazi or a snob. I'm learning lots about it myself.
I'm in awe with some creations on dA

What should the pixel dimensions of my canvas be for pixel arts?

JuicyZone In reply to Silver111777 [2014-12-26 17:11:14 +0000 UTC]
it depends...if you are a starter, you can use a canvas between 30x30 to 50x50 just to begin with simple artworks. My canvas vary on the artwork I want to portray. My biggest one is 430x320. Remember, the bigger the harder to work on which means your art will be more elaborated than the others, but it also depends on what people desire to draw and how detailed it will be.

Awesome tutorial. I have no idea how to pixel lol I would take the time to learn, but the art I already do is so time-consuming haha.

well vectors are easy to do but do take time of many factor, specially dimension and measure. Sometimes Ilustrator can be quite annoying but I always get the other way around.
It might take you a lot of time but I just adore your desserts with no doubt in mind! Thanks!

Thanks! I mostly use Illustrator for all my desserts, so vectors come easy to me. Glad you like all my cute things
