Description A lot of people ask me how I paint my paintings and collaborations, so I decided to finally make tutorials explaining the steps I take to get to the results you can see in my gallery.

Here's part 1, which shows how to get the shapes down easily.
In Part 2 I will explain how to lay down the colors, and in Part 3 I will further explain how to polish and detail the picture.

This technique is actually a variation of really old traditional oilpainting-technique called grisaille, aka greyscale. It's a very useful technique which helps separate the painting-process into more easily controllable steps.

I know I personally can get carried away by all the lovely colors of the world and my painting turns out to be a complete mess unless I think about the shapes first, as a separate step! Then comes the colors, then comes the detailing and polishing.

I'm sorry about certain inconsistency with the screencaps and whatnot, I painted the painting in another city with a mac and then came home and changed to my PC, I used two different versions of photoshop, etc. So getting this together was a bit messy. Hopefully you peeps can still understand something of it! @_@

That's wonderful to hear! It can make things so much easier to do the greyscale first!

Yes, it seems to be a very helpful technique! After I've gotten a bit of a grasp on how to paint correctly (I still am learning basics LOL) I will definitely use this tutorial!

i have seen the braids painting that one is awesome. but da pearls? ah, i needa check it out so you usually do 3-D painting right? hm, i am weak at shadings...i mean, i am not sure use what media i use to do shading D: plsss help D:

juuhanna In reply to ShiroMushi [2013-06-26 11:20:41 +0000 UTC]

I just paint with Photoshop, I don't use 3D programs or anything (if that's what you meant?)
And the shading is all explained in this tutorial, the next tutorials are about adding color and polishing the rough bits... but the shape is formed in the way I described in this particular tutorial.

Hmm well I dunno what to make a tutorial about, really. I was thinking of making a small tutorial about layer-settings and how to use them for coloring etc... but it's kinda complicated.

I don't get that second part, about the magic wand. I tried to do what was explained but it's not working how i want it to.
I'm working in painter 12 btw, idk if that makes it different.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to Hellsong-Diabla [2013-05-21 18:10:01 +0000 UTC]

I haven't used Painter in a while but I have the same version so I just checked - with Painter 12 you can select the outside areas with magicwand tool and then press ctrl and I at the same time; that'll invert the selection.
Then choose the other layer and fill the selected area with paintbucket tool. I hope that helps!

Hellsong-Diabla In reply to juuhanna [2013-05-22 01:48:41 +0000 UTC]

it worked in certain areas.
But i tried it in PS and it does a way better job then Painter 12 when it comes to that.

Thanks

This tutorial is simply wonderful! It's far more clear than most of the others I've seen!
But if I may ask a possibly stupid question based on my extremely inferior knowledge of Photoshop () what does the Multiply setting do to layers? I don't see what it changes. ^^"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to Indigo-Serenade [2013-05-12 18:51:59 +0000 UTC]

Well a multiply-layer is basically a transparent layer that darkens whatever layers are below it. Like if you have a colored layer underneath, when you draw on a multiply layer above it, the colors on the layer below will appear darker. But if you paint with whatever color on a multiply-layer and there's white below, it won't show at all. So basically it darkens the stuff below, and how dark the lower tones get depends on what color you put onto the multiply-layer.
(Gosh, that was a bit difficult to explain, sorry! I hope that makes some sense?)

Indigo-Serenade In reply to juuhanna [2013-05-12 20:17:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh! Don't worry, it makes perfect sense now! Thank you! I guess that's why I didn't notice it from the pictures... I'm not overly observant.
I must say that I'm amazed by the amount of detail you put into your lineart... did you take art lessons? You seem very professional!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to Indigo-Serenade [2013-05-12 20:33:04 +0000 UTC]

Well the effect depends a lot on how dark the colors that you put on the multiply-layer are etc... try it out and I'm sure you'll figure out the best way to use the properties of the layer to your advantage! There are thousands of ways to do things, it's important to test out different methods and find out the techniques that suit you the best!

And this lineart is (unfortunately!) not drawn by me but by *MeganeRid . He is super-talented and his linearts are really lovely, I highly recommend checking them out! My own lines are always such a mess, haha. But yeah I've graduated as an artist and specialize in oilpainting actually, in digital art I'm self-studied. :3

My oilpaintings are at my homepage johannatamminen.com actually. *.* I haven't posted them here in DA... dunno why the thought seems so alien to me, maybe I'll post them someday... 'till then, they're at my own site.

is there any big difference between tablet and a mouse?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to aldousroraito [2013-04-28 16:54:55 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's a huge difference! I highly recommend getting a tablet, there's so much more control and fluidity when painting with one. And I believe products such as wacom bamboo are around 100-200$, some other brands might be even cheaper. So you don't have to invest thousands or anything!
