Description A lot of people ask me how I paint my paintings and collaborations, so I decided to finally make tutorials explaining the steps I take to get to the results you can see in my gallery.

Here's part 1, which shows how to get the shapes down easily.
In Part 2 I will explain how to lay down the colors, and in Part 3 I will further explain how to polish and detail the picture.

This technique is actually a variation of really old traditional oilpainting-technique called grisaille, aka greyscale. It's a very useful technique which helps separate the painting-process into more easily controllable steps.

I know I personally can get carried away by all the lovely colors of the world and my painting turns out to be a complete mess unless I think about the shapes first, as a separate step! Then comes the colors, then comes the detailing and polishing.

I'm sorry about certain inconsistency with the screencaps and whatnot, I painted the painting in another city with a mac and then came home and changed to my PC, I used two different versions of photoshop, etc. So getting this together was a bit messy. Hopefully you peeps can still understand something of it! @_@

very useful, can I ask you one question..
is each step of paiting in gray colors (like lighting, darker area, base colors) are on different/seperate layers, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to warrior-of-dream [2012-12-28 12:21:04 +0000 UTC]

I make the first grey layer flat medium grey at first but I also make the first rough light and dark greys onto the same layer.
I then make some more layers to polish the look; I use layer modes on those, and having them on separate layers makes it possible to easily erase areas that don't look good etc... It can all be done on one layer too though, I just usually make three or so layers and once they look good I flatten them.

I love this tutorial, such an beautiful way to colour. I've thought about trying this before, but didn't know where to start.

juuhanna In reply to jelgal [2012-12-27 08:27:00 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! It's really rough at this stage, but the third tutorial will show how I like to clean up the image so that's ready to be published.
And of course one can use more time doing the greyscale neatly, and thus get a finished picture just by adding colors, no need for the final clean up at all. But I personally enjoy the third stage a lot so I don't mind painting sloppily during the first two steps...

well, we see from the start of the tutorial that you're new to drawing! No Only joking, this is a bit ironical lol

I've read your tuto through and though I don't have the photoshop software I find the principle very clear, and useful. So thanks for that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to FabriceW [2012-12-27 08:48:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well the drawing isn't mine, it's ~MeganeRid 's. I just received a million notes asking about my techniques right when I was starting to paint this, so I decided to hit two birds with one stone. And his lines are gorgeous!

You can also use this technique with other softwares, as well as oilpainting which is where this technique originates from! Originally the master-painters would make the grisaille/greyscale with umber, white and black, and then start glazing over it with colors.
So this is just a digitalized version of an ages old awesome technique!

FabriceW In reply to juuhanna [2012-12-27 08:54:16 +0000 UTC]

ok! that's very interesting, and I didn't know about it at all!
So thanks for telling me
So we imitate glazing by applying colour on a new layer, and colour opacity set low?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to FabriceW [2012-12-27 09:28:01 +0000 UTC]

The opacity doesn't even have to be set low, if the color-layer is in overlay more. It will act like glazing in that mode!

This is really awesome! And I love how you acknowledge our comments .

May I ask how you neaten up the lines? I use a free program called GIMP (I don't want to ask my mum to buy me Photoshop or anything ), and I have this drawing that I've spent about a million years on, just trying to smoothen the messy lines out. Any suggestions?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to Tobassinesia [2012-12-26 16:45:27 +0000 UTC]

I do my best to show my appreciation in return! And I love comments.

As for the lines... I don't really smoothen out the lines at all, in a way!
In tutorial 3 I will show how I actually paint over the whole thing with 100% opacity brush, covering everything underneath!
Once I've laid down the greyscale, I add rough colors. And after that I create new layer on normal layer mode, set it on top of all others, and just start painting by picking colors with color-picking tool and smooth brush. The messy lines underneath and general roughness offer a wide variety of hues to pick from while painting the last layer, so at least for me it's actually better for the lines to be sketchy and messy! I'm not sure how well I'll be able to explain the technique with pictures, but I'll do my best. *~*

Tobassinesia In reply to juuhanna [2012-12-27 10:15:36 +0000 UTC]

It sounds awesome! But since you use Photoshop I'm not sure it would be the same... I guess I'll see, eh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to Tobassinesia [2012-12-28 12:15:52 +0000 UTC]

colorsplashxx [2012-12-26 15:17:53 +0000 UTC]

This is awesome, thanks for sharing this! ^^
I wanted to ask, when you start adding color, is the blending mode of the layer always on overlay? And do you use the same layer for all the elements (skin, hair, clothing)?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

juuhanna In reply to colorsplashxx [2012-12-26 16:34:35 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it's just one layer set to overlay, and I slap all colors into it. After I have the base down I can add more layers on different modes, but those are just detailing and... well, extras really. The basic color-scheme is on one layer only.
