Description Cross-posted on my original account, .

Something a bit different from my usual adoptables' pics...
Some of you have asked about the program I use, how do I colour, etc. I now realize that I have not answered any of these questions in this tutorial.

This tutorial is about creating a easy-to-use mould for your adoptables in Paint Tool SAI. I tried to cover every step of my process, with lots of images and little text. The reading flow is somehow irregular but I trust that the arrows will be able to show you the right way.

The Pikachu lineart is free-to-use and can be found in my Linearts/Tutorials Folder.

Note: The lineart was done in SAI with a Wacom tablet, so it's digital. I'll probably do another part on how to make a mould with a traditional lineart, but I'll do that when I have more time, a camera and an inked traditional pic.

I'm afraid I don't understand. I use select all around the lineart, but in the inside of the lineart, it's not white, it's the same color as the select. Do I need to use the deselect in order to make it empty inside the lineart?

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Blazefoxen [2016-06-10 20:50:51 +0000 UTC]

The fact that everything is the same colour makes me think that it's a lineart problem. Check it thoroughly for holes, because if there's only one place where the outside and the inside are connected, if you select one, you select also the other.

Never mind. I found the answer. But can you explain it anyways? Just so I can remember?

The principle is the same for every art program that has layers available, among those there are GIMP, Krita and MediBang that are free.

Ah, that may be a problem then.
Still, keep those in mind for a future where you're allowed to, this way you won't spend money to start playing around with drawing softwares.

What does layer clip do? For some reason this works when I don't put it on layer clip. When I do, all the color disappears...o.0

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to KuroidaAdopts [2014-10-04 07:32:07 +0000 UTC]

Layer clip locks the colour contours on the outline of layer below it. If you clip the base (the lower layer in your file), all colour is going to disappear because there's no base.

Depending on where you have your menu there's a square with cross made of arrows, select that and click over your copied pic and move it around.

I have a mac so I can't get paint tool sai, do you have any recommendations on what I can get instead?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to Winns3000 [2014-08-28 18:45:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, GIMP is a nice software that is free, and probably has Mac compatibility... Other than that, I've tried Open Canvas, which is not bad and really a more rough brother of SAI, but I don't know if there's a Mac version (this one is not free). Manga Studio is also a good program, but the organization felt too much like Photoshop and I find Photoshop overly complicated to learn. Because I'm a lazy ass.

i was wondering how do you send a picture of the adoptable if someone buy it ?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to PyroFloral [2013-10-08 11:51:46 +0000 UTC]

You don't need to send anything, as long as you don't take the adoptable down from your gallery. Or you could send them the file by e-mail but it's generally not necessary.

(If the adoptable is part of a sheet, you might want to crop it and upload it on sta.sh, if you really want.)

ShadowhawkArt [2013-08-09 01:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Just out of curiosity, how do you invert the colors like that so they go into the lineart in Photoshop CS5 Extended? I looked all over but couldn't find it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to ShadowhawkArt [2013-08-09 06:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Select > Invert
(I think, mine is in Italian so I might have mistranslated it.)

Though the 'select' brush can be found only in SAI, one of the reasons why I use it more often than PS.

Do you know how you can do this in Photoshop? I only have Mac

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Karijn-s-Basement In reply to AnimeAdopts [2013-06-22 09:05:22 +0000 UTC]

Err, not really... I know that PS has a magic wand tool, but not a select tool, so you'd have to colour the main part and then delete/fix the main base after colouring and not before it. And I also believe that PS has clipping masks, which is the equivalent to the 'layer clip'...

I'm sorry I can't help you more, but I use PS only for watermarks and filters.
