Yeah, I was thinking you might have been using masking fluid for this, but I didn't know for sure. Thanks for the tutorial! It's always nice to learn something from unique artists like yourself.

How do you manage to be sure the masking fluid will not tear up your paper at some point ?
I did several test on several papers, like letting the watercolor dry for a really long time before removing it, or on the other hand, removing the masking fluid immediately when it's dry enough. I also did test on how long I let the masking fluid dry before painting on it... Sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes not. Plus, it depend on what layer I'm on, sometimes things are doing great for two or three layers of watercolor and suddenly all is ruined because "a thing" made the masking fluid capricious =<

What type of paper have you used?
I generally use Canson cotton paper 140lb, or 140lb Arches hot/cold pressed paper. They work alright.
More fibrous papers I would definitely stay away from. D:

This tutorial is perfect!
One question though
In your first(ish) step, where you apply the first wash, I can see that you've been able to apply this wash without it bleeding or in any other way straying into the drawing of the girl. How did you do that?
I'm not familiar with watercolour paper, but is it something to do with that? Or, are you super skilled at this kind of thing? Haha

koyamori In reply to Elemie [2010-12-18 17:49:50 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for late reply.
What I did was wet the area around the girl first, so when I apply the wash, the colours naturally run around her instead of crossing the line.

Though I'm not that great with watercolours, I can tell you that the trick is to get everything very wet (before applying the paint) except the girl (where you want it to be white/colour of the paper). The paint will go only where it's soaking wet, and will leave the dry spots alone. I'm not sure if that's the technique used above, but maybe you could give it a try?

I was wondering if that was the trick behind it. I'll definately give it a go, thanks! C:

nice tutorial - not so difficult to understand, I wonder how it is when the teory meets practise ^^
I like the idea of traceing a sketch on computer screen - I was doing it on window and my neighbours looked at me suspiciously

They are all one image, except all the pictures except the last one is taken with a camera so it is darker than the actual thing.
