I'll have to play with that pushing the brush away idea. Thanks for the tip and for sharing!

This is so useful - thanks for explaining everything so clearly! I didn't realize how much work went into each and every one of your pictures - it definitely pays off

good way to publish your drawings! I make everything with a pencil and after scan it and finish the drawing with my computer programme (not photoshop! It's gimp... But I'm satisfied with it)

If you are curious to see the results go to my gallery!

AHH! I just got that crazy printer last month, but for some reason the Twain isn't showing up in photoshop. Nice step by steps, you is a genius!

What big printer/scanner are you using? I need a new scanner and I could use a large format printer.

That's an interesting method (digitally sketching and then inking with a brush...) I always felt uncomfortable with traditional inking (we were asked to ink with a Sergent Major penholder, so it was tough to have nice and smooth strokes. it scratched the paper instead...) but it makes me want to give it a try !

Is any printer able to ink on bristol ?

last thought : I always wondered how it was like to draw on a cintiq...

I'm not suuuure... you may have to check your printer's make and take a look either in the manual or online, but generally this bristol board paper isn't super thick so it shouldn't be a problem.

I've never inked traditionally, but that was very fascinating. And I never understood why artists drew their lines in colour before inking, now that makes sense. Thank you so much for that great tutotial. You really tried to make it helpful, especially for beginners. That's rare.

Its interesting to see the subtle differences everyone has with scanning and preparing their work. Thanks for sharing these tutorials, I always pick up different little things from each one I read.

It's nice to know you use tech pens.. a lot of people I've met are snooty about using them. They're mainly what I use for now because I haven't worked with brushes much at all.

Also, you have pretty hands. *creepy~*

WHOA WHOA WHOA! Waitwaitwaitwaitwaitwaitwait- the digital drawing was on the bristol board? You printed on bristol board?

ktshy In reply to Argema-Brassingtonei [2011-02-25 13:20:53 +0000 UTC]

Yup! The bristol isn't too crazy thick, but the printer is strong enough to handle it.

I do have one question though. What kind of pen do you use when inking?
Thanks!

Thank you! I'm using a pigma micron sized 005 (but i also like using the prismacolor premier fine line markers).

great tutorial! I don't know why I've never thought of doing my underdrawings with my col-erase pencils and then just discarding that color channel once I have it inked and scanned in...fantastic tip. Will definitely do that next time. thanks!

Wow, working with ink looks exciting. But I'm a lefty and one that hasn't perfected how NOT to smudge things yet. -_-

ktshy In reply to kiyra [2011-02-25 13:25:46 +0000 UTC]

Actually I learned to paint from Paul Pope who is a lefty comic artist! His method is to push the brush away from himself, something I should get better at (I draw dragging the brush towards me).

Interesting! I've been playing it safe with Micron pens but inks look positively lovely. I'll have to expand my media and start practicing. Your advice will definitely help.

Wow, I was wondering how you got your lines so crisp. Thanks for the user friendly tutorial.

Curious though, you should get the same effect if you draw in red pencil (instead of digitally sketching in red) when you turn off the red channel, right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ktshy In reply to BottledPoe [2011-02-25 18:59:34 +0000 UTC]

Most definitely! A lot of times my digital sketch is so loose I'll tighten it up after its printed with red (or more accurately vermillion and sometimes orange) colerase pencil.

Hawock-Hain [2011-02-25 02:08:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, this is wonderful! You've written this out very clearly and it's easy to follow, even the levels and color mode. I suppose even with the color channel trick, your lines still suffer some damage?
Beautiful work, by the way. I'm always too chicken to use a brush and ink.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ktshy In reply to Hawock-Hain [2011-02-25 13:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And yeah, even though I'm not noticing as much line damage from this method as I used to when pencilling in graphite, I still can't quite get my lines to look as nice to me on the computer as they do on the page. Something I'm still struggling to figure out.

Omg you use ink and brush and STILL get that smooth line?! D8 I am le amazed! I've used brushpen and still my line's all wobbly, can't but admire your skills there.

And thank you for the awesome tuto-duo! I've longed for something like this for ages! It really came for a need. Thank you!

AshHavynn [2011-02-25 00:59:31 +0000 UTC]

Very helpful tutorial! I often use the pale-print to ink method, but I color traditionally so I usually cover up the printed lines with medium. I am very excited to try scanning the b&w inks and cleaning them up, however. I've never used channels to do so.

Ealucid [2011-02-25 00:10:43 +0000 UTC]

A great look into your process, but I couldn't help noticing that you said to let the brushes dry with the tip facing up. I've always been taught to let brushes dry on their side. I was told the water drips down into the ferrule and loosens the glue, making all the bristles fall out, although I'm interested if you've been taught differently and I am just horribly misinformed. :C

Ps. so jelly of your smooth lines. DAMN GURL.

ktshy In reply to Ealucid [2011-02-25 13:29:07 +0000 UTC]

Aaaactually you're right. I goofed on my wording with this, as I just meant to say "don't dry your brush sitting on the bristles" I'm updating it now

Clockworthy [2011-02-25 00:07:35 +0000 UTC]

hiphopfarendo In reply to ??? [2011-02-24 23:48:13 +0000 UTC]

I love the idea of sketching in red and erasing it using channels. I've always used color replace and then levels... but channels would probably destroy less of my drawing. :3
