Seeing the inked version of Fraulein Sassafras, I can't help but think that she's meant for a coloring book. Not the kind most would hand their kids, but coloring is FUN!

Oh goodness, I wasn't even aware of using that channel trick! I used to always go into Hue/Saturation and lighten my selected pencil color 100%. Going through channels seems like it would be quicker; I'll have to try it out for myself! Thanks, KT.

I have never seen such a helpful tutorial in my whole live. It's funny to see that you flip your picture too, to see if it's correct. I already did that back in primary school. I held my picture in the sunlight and when it seemed correct like that I was tremendously satisfied. Oh the memories! Next year I'm going to attend an artschool. I've grown so fast...

my friend bought that brush-cleaner yesterday. I tried it out on my brushes that I used when masking my paintings (when the mask fluid dries out it turns into rubber and ruin the brush) and after one hour of cleaning we managed to peel all of the rubber off the brush in one try! And the brush was a good as new! People really should buy that stuff. It can save brushes that has dried with oils in it! AND IT SMELLS LEMON!

This may be a bit of an irrelivant question, but what type of scanner do you use and WHERE did you find it? This past holiday season I searched everywhere I could think of to find a scanner/printer than handles sizes larger than a legal document but couldn't find anything.

I use a Brother MFC-6490CW all in one printer/scanner. I bought it directly from Brother, but shop around as you might find some cheaper deals

Thanks so much for this KT! I have been looking for a way to make clean nice line art for coloring on the computer! This all makes perfect sense (with the color tabs).
Question: Have you ever tried this process with traditionally drawing (say with the non-photo blue like you did in school), inking it, scanning it and deleting the blue? Will this work the same, or should it not be as clean because the lines weren't originally made digitally?
Also, I have never tried actually inking with... ink. Does it spread when you use it? And how much are you deluding it with water? (I read water mentioned up there... is that just to clean the brushes?)

Thank you for your questions! Actually yes, I have worked with blue pencil (that's pretty much how I did most of my Shrub Monkeys comics). It'll work just as well, just make sure your ink is nice and black! Also, sometimes when I scan out my red drawing I'll do some additions in red pencil on top, the computer treats the pencil and digital line the same when you scan it back in so it's all good.
Ink wise, I don't water it down, I use it straight from the bottle. I wet my brush a bit at first to get it ready for ink, but as you want a nice clean line (and you're not water colouring) you don't want to add water to the inks. I'll swish my brush around in water if it feels like the ink is starting to get too thick on my brush, but that's usually after maybe 15 minutes of use. It shouldn't bleed on your paper, if it does it usually means your paper quality isn't very good.

This is a fantastic tutorial. FAN-TAST-TICK. You break it down so easily and make it comprehendable and it's easy to see what each step does to the drawing/sketch. It's also really comforting to see someone traditionally ink a drawing instead of drawing it straight-up on the computer (I personally find it just difficult and traditional allows me to move around and be mobile). <3 You are super awesome.

You should try YouTubing yourself inking sometime. It would be interesting to see how you handle your inking process in more detail as well as see how you actually put the ink on the page.

Oh sweet, this is the same method I use! It isn't unnecessary or tedious at all, it's the simplest and cleanest method I've ever used. Super jealous of your awesome scanner/printer, though!

Awesome tutorial, I really needed this! I've been sketching a comic with a 2b pencil and inking and scanning it in. However, I keep getting frustrated with all of these little smudge marks and fine gray lines that I keep having a hard time getting rid of, so whenever I adjust the levels, the artwork is almost too pixelated.

I tried using this method once a loooong long time ago. Failed since I used those BIC needle point pens and computer paper, those tech pens you use seem much better as well as the sturdier-looking bristol paper, I might invest in these and give your refined method a try. I also notice many pro artists draw on 11 x 14 canvas/paper, any particular reason why?

It's a good middle size, the smaller version feels almost a bit too small, and the bigger version is pretty huge! I just like to work biggish myself

This is fantastically helpful, especially the part about cleaning lineart in photoshop (I was being a bit stupid and just changing the lightness / contrast until only black was left, it looked horrible)

I work in a similar process when I work with traditional inking. But what I really took from this is "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE, she's so good at drawerings, hur hur" and "HEEEEY! I has the same printer!"
