I've just been using the color select option to select all red in my linework and then deleting it. But this seems like it'd be about as fast. Great tutorial!

Awesome. And I've got the same Brother all-in-one, isn't it dreamy?

This is perfect!
One question though: why do you let the brush dry by pointing UP? I once heard the tip will lasting longer if it can hang down in form... (I have one of this brush-holder to hang up the brushes.)

Thaaaat is a good point, I'll have to clarify that in the tutorial. What I wanted to say was to not let it dry with the brush tip smooshed sitting down on a surface, but yes, you're totally right about wanting the brush to hang upside down. Thanks!

Thanks for the quick answer! Could have come to that conclusion by myself but I also wanted to be sure about that Now I am!

I've never considered doing the sketch on the computer then inking it with real media. That's a really good idea.

Cool.
I don't use channels much because I started photoshop a bit after 4.0, so maybe I missed something, but why not just desaturate your line art (shift-ctrl-u in Windows) instead of jumping around in color modes?
I like this trick, though. Usually if I do anything with red or blue leads, I just try to get rid of them in levels/threshold. Never played with the channels, but that seems potentially neater now.

Good question! But if I de-saturate the colours instead of using this channel-changing method, all the orange line art will become grey line art and it'll take a bit more effort than using the level adjuster to fix it (I have to go in and meticulously erase the marks). Adjusting levels will help of course, but by the time I make the grey under-sketch white, it'll also really cut into the dark lines of my inks (making it look more pixelated than I want). The same could be said by color-selecting the red and making it white. It works, but also takes a bit of back and forth and I still feel like my ink lines suffer a bit as a result. This method here I've found to be the kindest to my inked line. Hope that helps!

on a tangent, someday when I feel industrious, I'll have to do a side by side comparison of how a web-sized image looks when the line art was thresholded as opposed to just well leveled at working size. I've been a long time user of threshold.

THANK YOU KT! I've never been able to figure out everything after that channel part without the color always coming back. YOU HAVE SAVED ME TONS OF UNECCESSARY WORK!

This is off topic, but you have pretty hands.
Ooh! and if you do an expression and posing tutorial, I'll be eager to see that! ^-^

Wow, so you actually have removed the *pencilling* portion of physical work, but I absolutely LOVE the fact that you use a REAL brush/pen/ink to ink! Fantastic. That's the one thing that I regret about the comics industry pulling people to color straight from pencils - no inking means sloppy pages. Only very few artists have pencils so tight that direct-to-color actually looks good.
So your inking is *beautiful*, and thankfully you're keeping it real

Thank you, and you raise a good point! While I do like "pencilling" digitally and feel it's really efficient, I still believe doing so traditionally, even just drawing in sketchbooks all the time, is SUPER IMPORTANT. If folks get too used to computer cheats there's a danger they may get sloppy with their traditional skills. I like to use the computer to enhance my drawings, but they cant replace good drawing skills and habits
