Description
This tree is just shy of 8 inches tall, including the rock. It's made with silver floral wire (and ooooh how it hurt my fingers) and well over 100 crystal AB bicones. I love silver and crystals together. This won't be the last time you see that combination.Close-up of branches: [link]

this is so beautiful - I've always been fascinated by those trees when I was a kid (my grandma has several of those)... I have to force myself not to look at them too long else I'll want to give it a try myself, now that I have a bit of experience with wire wrapping and the like

That's how I feel about a lot of jewelry techniques. There's a lot of beautiful ones, but I have to be careful because I don't want to get hooked on something else! I try to dedicate my time to wire trees and beaded flowers.
I'm so glad you like it.

haha, I can absolutely relate to that I try and stay with my wire wrap pendants and earrings and don't even look to far left or right

How much wire do these take? Also, where do you start? I kinda want to take a shot at making one... I really like the roots on this one.

If you buy a paddle of silver floral wire, you'll have more than enough. That's what I used for this tree. I'll warn you that floral wire is pretty rough on your fingers, though. A lot of times I use copper wire, which is much easier to work with and comes in a ton of different colors, but is more expensive. I couldn't give you a full tutorial, but the basic technique is to take a long piece of wire, put a bead or multiple seed beads in the middle, twist down a bit, and start over. Start putting those "twigs" together in a tree pattern until you have a big tree. Does that help a little?

How long should the wire be, usually?
And thanks, it did help because I didn't even know which end to start at!

It depends on how big you want the tree to be. For a good size tree (6-8 inches), I usually measure from the tips of my fingers to my shoulder and back. I don't use rulers

Rulers are for wimps, anyway. Don't think I want to start one that big...
So basically you build down?

Right. I make all the little branches, then start putting them together to make big branches, then the big branches go together to make a tree.

I might, but there's a winter tree in the works that I think might turn out even nicer, and I don't want to put two silver/crystal trees. So we'll see

Lordy, that's beautiful.
If I asked you nicely, would you make one with tiny disco balls hanging off like apples?
