Description Here's a piece from my BFA show. It's entitled "Exoskeletal Emergence" and is made of just glass and metal. The glass is removable and intrechangable with other colors/shapes.

This piece is about 7-8 feet tall with the glass in it. It took about 75 hours to complete.

I'm in love with your work. I think alot of these would look pretty sweet with lights inside..

Thanks. Yeah, a thought I've been working with for quite a while now... Thinking it is one thing... Actually getting it to work, is another!

It'll happen. I've got one with a light in it, but it's not glass....

Wonderful work.
How exactly did you get the texture on the metal like that?
I have an ametuer interest in metal working, and I'm working on getting learning more, etc.

I don't suppose that you could make it into an oil lamp?

LaughingTree In reply to wasureru [2005-10-18 09:53:31 +0000 UTC]

The metal is all welded. Lots of 9 ga wire that I wrapped around some 1/2 round stock that had been shaped. And then I just weld the hell out of it. MIG weld. And I just fill in all the gaps with welds. It's a pretty tedious process, but it leaves great results!

And although it would be insanely huge (This piece is over 8 feet tall!) and pretty tricky, I suppose if you reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally wanted to, you could turn this into an oil lamp. But I think I'm going to leave it juuuuuuuuuust the way it is

That makes a surprising amount of sense.
So much that I'm not surprised I didn't think of it.

As for the oil lamp bit, I meant the glass piece on the top, not changing the metal.
It would certainly be large, but it would make one hell of a citronella lamp.

This is pretty awesome. It's like following the very patterns that emerged in lifeforms little by little. The branchy thing reminds me of a neuron cell

Wow. That's so wonderful that you'd say that. As that is precisely what my intentions are with this body of work. To blur the line between human and plant. To create something that can be seen as anatomical and plantlike. Some people see branches/roots, some see neurons, some see veins/arteries!

And my whole body of work evolved piece by piece. An evolution of an idea.

It's like you read my thesis before you made this comment! Hit the nail right on the head

instant favorite! I love the inclusion of the other pieces too, I am curious as to what the strings/wire is connected to once it comes off the walls? Its a brilliant installation, simply breathtaking. Its nice to see that your schools gallery has flat walls, for some reason the designers of ours built it in a circle....yeah its really strange....anwyay I love how it all connects and as for the presentation of the whole piece I love how the string/wire goes off the frame it keeps me asking questions and guessing as to what Im not seeing. Sculpture being AMAZING aside I think this is also a beautiful photograph of your work that in its own right is a fine piece of art. Keep it up and I cant wait to see what you come up with in Seattle, I would love to see it in person.

Thanks kind sir! Yeah, flat walls do come in handy, although, I could think of some pretty nifty stuff to do with rounded walls. But generally speaking... I'd say flat is quiiiiiiiiite a bit nicer.

As for Seattle, I'll be there for 9 weeks starting July 4th. I'll be creating at least one of my larger sculptures, which I'll be then donating to the Pilchuck auction. So I'll be spending a lot of time during the beginning few weeks working on that. It's due July 23, so I'll have just under 3 weeks to complete it.

After that I should have a little free time. I'm hoping anyhow.

In due time, you shall see more and more from my show... I'm back to my triple monitors, so that makes using photoshop so much nicer. And I should hopefully have a little bit more free time now as well!

Its cool sometimes to have the curved walls but paintings that people present look bad sometimes.... Well keep me posted on your schedule and I may have to take a field trip down to seattle when you get some time off to check out your work. Cant wait to see what else you post from your BFA show.

Very Nice.

How was the tree done if you don't mind me asking?

The gray glass looks really nice.

Of course The piece consists of 9 gauge metal wire wrapped around a 1/2 inch solid round core. I then welded the entire thing with a mig welder. Hours upon hours upon hours of welding. Basically the entire piece has been welded over.

And thanks about the comment about the glass. That's actually the third piece of glass that I made to go in the top. The first two didn't integrate well with the rest of the tree. Third time's the charm!

Ooooo.....I like, I like! The glass portion is very nifty in particular. It makes me think of the things that people throw into the trees around here (on campus, mainly shoes)...in a good way. What are the little white things along the wall? *grins* fortunately, I still have about 5 months til my BFA show, which is excellent, since I have no clue what I'm going to do for it. *l*

Ah, ok. I can live with that then.

Wasn't sure if it was just background decor. One of the past ceramics BFA students put fancy molding all the way around the gallery for her show. *Very* subtle, but it was there.
