Masking is a sort of color-based hiding, compared to clipping, which only uses the path.

White areas in a mask are visible when applied, while black or transparent are invisible.

This one was a simple gradient mask.

I've started to use masking for magic as it allows one to make the inside transparent without creating a hard edge (such as this )
Compare that with the magic on this and you'll note a distinctive difference:
