This is a similar method to How to Make Magic Auras (It's Super Effective)
and Inkscape Tutorial: Unicorn's Magic Glow

Method derived from ZuTheSkunk and Parclytaxel . Idea for using masking in magic auras given by 90Sigma .
Combination of methods by me, and free for use by all with no attribution.

As good as Parclytaxel 's method of creating magic is, it's not quite as effective as stated, nor as I had hoped, although to a fair degree it is show accurate. Is it possible, then, to do a better job?

The ProblemThere is a small gap around the inner portion that has long plagued vector artists that depend on perfect alignment of paths. It is most noticeable in raster form against a contrasting background.
Note: this has been exaggerated, but visible unmodified in raster

Creating Magic Auras (minding the gap)
  • Start by defining the basic shape of the aura. It helps here to make every node symmetric for a more show-accurate look. The shape is a somewhat symmetric wave with variations on both sides.
  • Make a linked offset of the aura. Outset it about 1/4 of a wavelength.
  • Take the original path and make not one, but two duplicates of it. The topmost duplicate will have a thick, blurred, white stroke; the other should have a thick, blurred stroke the color of the magic aura, and a semi-transparent fill of the same color.
  • Set the fill color of the linked offset to the aura color, and make it transparent along a gradient. Apply the white stroke as a mask to the linked offset.
  • Reorder the original path so that it is on top of the first duplicate. Clip the duplicate with the original path. Add magic sparkles to taste.
  • If I recreate Parcly Taxel's image in this way, we see... No gap!

What about objects? If one looks closely at other objects being manipulated via magic in the show, the auras don't have gradients and are less opaque in the middle.
That's easy to replicate — don't apply any gradients, and make the fill on the inner portion of the aura less opaque.

Nice Tutoriall. I'll be following these steps when I get to adding magic to my Unicorn and Alicorn vectors.

Small gaps in things like this tend to bother me more than they should. Glad to see there's a fix for it, though.
