Description
Some more work on this. I need to seal the neck up a bit more - e.g. having an inner seal between the two rings ala the iron lung influences I mentioned. The oblong on the front is going to become a proper chest unit, though probably only to the extent of having a grill in a box. I'm taking that option since I want to avoid the obvious Iron Man comparisons that stem from having a circle on the chest. I might go with a circle at the base, though that'd probably look like they're walking around with a giant ! on their upper body. Which actually might be a little distinctive now I think about it . . .
How much of the body will be flexible beneath the solid metal chest plat will depend on how well I can get to grips with actually modelling fabric/rubber. This is going to be my first proper figurative project so . . . yeah, no idea how this'll go yet.
I'm probably going to end up remodelling the lamp innards a few times . . .
The BBC owns Doctor Who, the Cybermen, etc. I'm just modelling one for fun.

I think that anyone in the besieged base would be scared.
This is a good model.

I love this sleek classic design. Makes me want to see a animated series in a similar style to the green lantern animated series

I'm glad you're keeping the little teardrop things on the mask. Reminds you of the somewhat tragic nature of what the Cybermen are.

Indeed! The aesthetics of it just work. They make the faces that little bit doleful.

Another possibility, what if the teardrop-shapes in the metal faceplate contain small "headlights", just below the eyes? Normally kept switched off, but cybermen can activate them for night vision/targeting assistance. Vibes of this star trek scene .

I really must thank you for linking me to all these things! It's extremely useful to have someone else throwing inspiration at me.
I'm thinking I'll probably try to get some traceries of organic elements into the chest, though it's not going to be anything as obvious as the Daryl Joyce piece. I'm not a huge fan of having really big organic chunks on Cybermen - for me, it makes more sense for them to have buried the flesh deep under metal and plastic. Even the original Cybermen were supposed to have worn gloves! The glimpse of an eye or a tongue is perhaps much more effective at conveying what they've done to themselves. In that regard, the fish-eye lens effect on the Handy-Man's heart is something I'm considering using.
I'm going to steer clear of touch screens for unrelated reasons - the LCARs are to me instantly dated. I don't really want Cybermen that look like they're from 90s American sci-fi. Plus, I'm not at all sold on the idea of the Cybermen having to press buttons on their own body to make it work. Again, my inspiration is more to the Tenth Planet, where the chest unit had some controls, yes, but mainly seemed to be pumps and vents and so on.
I think the teardrops are sensors of the kind you suggest but I don't really want to pull too much attention to them. Making them active laser sights would, well, be a bit too Borg!

Maybe make the chest unit a TNG Star Trek-style inspired touchscreen/display terminal the cyberman can operate with their Tenth Planet-style human hands ? Or something like Daryl Joyce's redesign with a semitransparent chestplate behind which the organs can be partially seen or bioshock concept art .
