Description
The Kaled race is dead, consumed in the fires of the Thals' last-ditch missile attack. Only a few are aware that the Chief Scientist was responsible for the destruction of the Kaled city's defences and they are powerless to prevent him from unleashing his creations upon the remaining people of Skaro. The Mark Three travel machines are the culmination of evolution project, the perfect mechanism for the survival of the mutated Kaleds. Relentless and unstoppable, not only do they exact vengeance upon the Thals, they turn on the survivors in the Bunker, declaring that only they deserve to survive. Kaleds no more, they take the name given to them by their creator, a name from a lost language that simply means 'god'.
Dalek.

Well, this has given me sleepless nights over the past couple of days. The textures are a bit iffy, but that barbed wire ([link] ) tutorial really paid off.
The Daleks belong to Terry Nation's estate, this picture belongs to me and so do the props, sets and dressing.
Blender has very nice mist effects.

I can imagine a World War One scene where a scared soldier sees the enemy is not human, but a dalek.

Horrifying. You did a good job of combing a creepy atmosphere and a menacing Dalek...if only you could pop back and put these travel machines into Genesis of the Daleks.

I really like the idea of mixing the Daleks with WW1/WW2 style images and scenes of warfare, trenches and barbed wire and sandbags. It looks strangely effective together.

So Dalek means god in ancient Skarosian? Then where did Kaled come from?

I don't think that was ever explained. I'm using the idea from 'I, Davros' that there was a third race, the Dals, who had gone extinct centuries before (the Dals being what the predecessors to the Daleks were called in 'The Daleks'). It's quite a neat explanation for why it's Dals in the original story and Kaleds in 'Genesis' - the Thals, presumably, didn't have many accurate historical records left and confused the names.
But yeah, there was no explanation in 'I, Davros' for the origin of 'Kaled'.

Has overtones of The Dalek Project as well. Love the steel bolt effect and the overall feeling of menace that is produced

Looks lovely! Also, are you going to do any variants of your βdeath to the daleksβ dalek?

Librarian-bot In reply to dalekdino27 [2012-11-17 12:43:02 +0000 UTC]
I'm honestly not sure. I mean, I should probably do a version with the machine gun in place of the death ray, but there's a bit of a lack of variant inspiration for it. Given that they only appeared in Death to the Daleks, I've been treating them more as a transition variant than a fully fledged version. Perhaps I should give it some more thought though...

Oh, and aren't those cover's lovely?
I was listening to it while I was working on this, actually, which is apt. The original inspiration for this picture was in Genesis of the Daleks, though, and those shots of the first generation Daleks looming out of the darkness above the Thal trenches. I was originally going to replicate the night-time lighting from that serial, but the poison gas look took my fancy and I ran with it.
