Description
Once more with its origin in the TV21 comics, the Dalek 'hoverbout' is a mainstay of the expanded Dalek literature. The name 'Trans-solar Disc' came about somehow and it's what they're known as in the excellent Dalek Empire audios, so I use it too. Plus, 'hoverbout' seems a bit too...well...human to be a Dalek name.Terry Nation's estate owns the Daleks.

Actually, I heard somewhere that the TSDs had laser guns.

Some were depicted with guns, but originally they were just transport platforms.

The hoverbout originated in the sixties, when the daleks loved to be groovy. Trans-solar (I've even heard 'trans-terrestrial' disk) disks sound more serious. I mean, back in the 60s they had all sorts of weird names, especially in the comics.
'The brain-machine'
'The gessilator'
'The cassen-vibrator solar disruptor'
That kinda stuff... Anyway , love the desgin, really suits the NPD style

I really must build a brain machine...if only because it never once came up with a sensible plan...

Two Dalek trans-solar discs detonated in a planet's atmosphere is enough to completely burn away a planet's atmosphere and incinerate the surface of the planet. 0_o

It's from the audio episode Dalek Empire 4. Here's the quote:
Gen.L"Do you know the incredible power a dalek trans-solar disk must house lieutenant Carlisle? It's got to be able to travel between star systems without refuelling. If all that power is released in one single... You've got to get a signal through to the dalek ship. Kade's on board."
Lt. C "Kade?"
Gen.L "Never mind that. Just"
Lt.C "General. That other signal, whatever it was, has cut out. Our comms beam should be getting through now."
Gen.L "Patch me straight through to him!"
[...]
Fisk "The Dalek transmission has shut down. Something else is coming through. It's mission control..."
Gen.L (Comm)"Kade, Kade, are you reading me?"
Lt.SK "Punch it in Fisk! How did you know I was here?"
Gen.L (Comm)"Where else would you be? Kade, you must turn back 'round, those Trans-solar disks are converting themselves into bombs! You won't be able to stop them. They're going to destroy Kedru seven."
Lt.SK "No way."
Gen.L "Kade, you have to turn back! That's an order. We nearly lost you once today.""
Lt.SK "My wife and daughter are down there!"
Gen.L "Kade... I... I know... But I'm giving you a direct ord-"
Lt.SK "Fisk! Cut her off!"
Kennedy "Sir, we've gotta pull back! If that planet's going up we're too close to it."
Lt.SK "Shut it Kennedy, you want to cut and run again, that's all you ever do isn't it?"
[...]
Kennedy "It's too late. Those disks, they're blowing up!"
Lt.SK "Lajitta!"
[...]
Gen.L "Ops, Report, report!"
Lt.C "We're in the shockwave. All hull force fields are at maximum"
Gen.L (Quietly) "Kedru seven. Incinerated."
Lt.C "I think we're gonna make it."
Gen.L "Are we?"
Lt.C "Ma'am? I'm sorry, I didn't catch that."
Gen.L "Will there be anyone left? Do we have a report on any survivors on Kedru seven?"
Lt.C "General. There's no atmosphere. It's been burnt off." (holy shit)

Blimey. Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Scary. No one can accuse the Daleks of modest engineering.

Ha, that's not even the worst part!
Have you happened to have seen 'Victory of the Daleks?' A bomb small enough to fit inside the chest of a human-sized android supposedly had enough power to 'shatter the Earth.'

Actually in the new graphic novel/extended comic 'The Only Good Dalek' they mention the actual NDP as having tans-solar discs. The whole thing is like a throwback to Dalekmania.

Yep. Someone was clearly trying to cram in the references. Possibly a bit too gratuitously but I think the story pulls it off, from what I've seen flicking through.
The art though....not so much.

Oh, a lot of it's definitely good. But the horrendous perspective on the space shots just kill it for me.

You're a good artist is why. See when you're a crap artist like me, everything is good because my own art sucks. When you're a good artist you can look down on others XD.

I know about the other flying machines, mainly through Altered Vistas...but I have to say, none of them quite match the simple neatness of the hoverbout. I do have to say, though, that I loved seeing the 'forklift' hoverbouts in the background of 'Journey's End'...maybe I'll find a reason to cook one of those up!

Yep, the old tv21 stories, the city that couvld cover itself up with sand. That brings back memories. I'll have to dig those old Dalek annuals out bet my son would find them fun to read. Mechmasters did a poser version of this disk last year I think, the spherical headed emperor too. Your right about the humanisednaming. They gave them their own weights and measures and even time units but the writers really screwed everything else up.
