Description
Me again - and with yet more details. This week, aside from being rubbish due to illness, has seen a certain amount of back and forth with regards to some of the bits I'd already built. For example, when I came to fit the rear torpedo/probe tubes, I realised I'd drastically oversized them on the front (I blame the refit design). I scaled them down and discovered I could far more pleasingly integrate them into the neck. And having done that, I copied them over to the rear of the hull. Looks pretty spiffy if I do say so myself.
In addition to that . . . hull panelling added to the engineering hull, some reworking of the thrusters and a change in colour scheme there. Subspace radiators added to the nacelles. Upper tractor beam projector added above the shuttle bay and detail added to the rear curve. Small amount of detailing on the bridge module, namely the turbo-lift cap. Oh, and I decided to remove the radiators from the outside of the nacelle struts. Not 100% on this but I think having too much black there overbalances the colour scheme a little. Saucer is now more correctly UV mapped, but the texture needs redoing again since I've still not mastered getting the panels the right size all the way across the surface.
I also sketched out some more of the bridge, redoing the chairs and blocking in some consoles. I should explain that I have one turbo-lift there ala TOS, but thanks to mirroring, I have two doors and I was thinking that I'd keep the one on the left so that there's access to the back of the bridge module. However, I'm dithering a bit on that and may change it.
Still don't own Star Trek.

i have some advice if you are willing to listen: mabe put a second window over the first bridge window that follows the contours of the bridge dome.

I considered it but I decided that the angle would detract from the effect. Firstly, the more windows there, the harder that would be to render and I think it'd probably result in distortion. Second, considering the other option of just having the view screen follow the contour of the dome, I have this ill-defined feeling it wouldn't look right.I think it works fine on the Shenzhou, going up, but having it slope down on the inside . . . I don't know. As I said, it's ill-defined but for the moment, I'm sticking with keeping it vertical.

i mean something like what was presented here:Β i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/iβ¦
a second windowΒ covering the first that matches the curves fo the bridge dome

Even with Transparent Aluminum, isn't that viewing window for the bridge very, very problematic? All it'd take is a small piece of debris or a stray phaser blast and it's a full-on red-shirt bridge crew event. Overall I like the design, it's very TOS but seems more elegant and sleek.

Thing is, the same thing holds true even if it's fully enclosed. Star Trek ships always, without fail, have bridges placed where a single stray impact could wipe them out. Just because they have opaque walls doesn't mean they're any less vulnerable to the kinds of danger that routinely get flung around space (as has been shown on the show many, many, many times).
To my mind, having a window on the outside actually makes that bridge positioning make more sense! And I see no reason that the transparent material has to be any less damage resistant than the rest of the hull. After all, isn't that the point of imagining a space-age substance like transparent aluminum? Starship design doesn't make a lick of real-world sense, but that's never really been the point. It's about what looks good, at least to the artist responsible.
Glad you're liking the over design!

I actually did a quick internet search about Transparent Aluminum. I had only remembered ST4: The Voyage Home, but apparently it was used in a TNG episode. Subspace can damage it, too.
And you're right, aesthetics is the ruling factor in the shows, if only it worked so well in the real world.

Nice looking nacelles...and that bridge looks marvellous.
I love how the ship's coming along. I wouldn't mind having a Star Trek film with this one!
