Roxanne groaned as she lay on the ground, cheeks puffed from trying to hold her breath. Hours earlier she had pranked her older sister, Stephanie, by leaving a handkerchief covered with her stink in the older skunk's room, and now she was paying the price. Stephani had plotted, waiting for Roxanne to relax and let her guard down before striking in retaliation. The older sibling caught her sister unawares, spilling her from her chair as she watched TV. Quick as a flash Stephanie sat on Roxanne, pinning her down.
"You can't hold your breath forever, Roxy," Stephanie taunted. " The sooner you give in, the sooner this will all be over."
Roxanne shook her head. Her face reddened and she heaved, trying to unseat her sister. Stephanie held on, bracing and riding out the activity like a rodeo rider. Feet and legs tangled. Hands swatted away fingers that tried to flip her over. Stephanie laughed.
"Face it, Sis," she said. "I have the upper hand."
The pressure in Roxanne's lungs built up, the urge to breathe burning in her chest. Stephanie grinned, sensing the younger skunk's fading resolve.
"Awe, finding it a bit hard to hold on, Roxy?" Stephanie teased.
The older skunk released a burst of stink, coiling her tail around her sister's face. She timed it perfectly, the smell hanging in the air as Roxanne finally gave in, gasping for air. Instantly the younger sibling grimaced.
"That's awful, Steph!" Roxanne moaned.
Stephanie raised an eyebrow, her tail tapping against Roxanne's nose before relaxing to lay alongside the younger's head.
"Serves you right," Stephanie shot back. "Maybe this will make you think twice about pulling a prank on me, Roxy."
The older skunk stood up, her tail dragging over Roxanne's head and leaving a trace of stink in Roxanne's hair. Stephanie whistled happily to herself as she walked away, and Roxanne sat up. She groaned. It would take a long shower to get rid of Stephanie's scent. Roxanne frowned, but then slowly smiled. Sure this prank had backfired, but that didn't mean she would let it discourage her. She just needed to up the ante. Roxanne staggered off, heading for the shower. She would wash and get clean, and then she would plan. The prank war was only just beginning...
