My entry for the Video Game History project at

For my entry I decided to take a stab at Hollow Knight. Even though it's a more recent game, I think it very well deserves a special spot in video game history. It simply blends many elements, each done exceedingly good, into one amazing combination.

First, the design, it not only does it have breathtaking hand-drawn animation, but also an astoundingly designed environment, with a beautiful overworld and masterfully crafted maps with tons of secrets. Second, the sound, which is every bit as amazing as the design and really helps build the atmosphere with lovely overworld music and upbeat boss battle themes. Third, the story and lore, they are not only wonderfully written, but also equally wonderfully presented. Both are mostly provided through dialogue and character/item descriptions (and later through Dreamnailing), but unlike games with similar storytelling, it's nothing as criptic them, once you have the pieces, the puzzle becomes very clear, and gives you a lot of feels of accomplishment once you figure it out. Fourth, the gameplay, one could say it's the most important part, and just like the others, it certainly doesn't disappoint. The controls are smooth, the map is vast and full of secrets, the stages and boss fights are challenging but fair, in general, it's one damn pleasant adventure. Also fith, as a bonus, the are 4 DLC packs, each adding new features, bosses, and exand on the lore, and all of them are FREE!

At first I wanted to depict the battle between the Knight and Grimm, but just couldn't get it right, either the pic looked like a mess, or it looked to similar to other countless depictions of that boss fight. So in the end, i switched to another scene, namely the post-battle event after the true final boss, The radiance, when both Hollow Knights permanently seal the Radiance in the pitch-black abyss. I just thought it would fit my dark style.

Great piece. Really captures the feel of darkness looming, ready to overtake the light. The white area really stand out, it looks so bright. *_*

The game has an ongoing theme of light and darkness, and both shown as equally good and bad.

In this case, it's the darkness that brings peace extinguishing the light that blinds and makes one lose their mind >3

Actually, it's not quite that simple. Both darkness and light have been shown as positive and negative.

For light, we have the Pale King, who's brilliant white light symbolises purity and enlightenment, as he brings a choice of intellect to bugkind, and then we have The Radiance's orange light, which blinds you instead and causes madness. As for darkness, we have the Knight, who symbolises peace and "protection" (a sort of "darkness that shelters you" theme), but then there's Grimm's bloodred darkness, symbolising chaos and fear of the dark, not to mention, while he acts friendly, it is clear you're just a means to an end for him (to quote the White Lady "it would be "naive" to call it a friend").

But one thing I can agree on, HK is far deeper than one might suspect ^^

As for the pic, thank you glad you liked my take on this scene ^^

And as for Dark Souls, while I'm not a big fan of the series (well, unless you count Bloodborne, I really love that one), but I do have a few bosses sketched.

That's what you get for choosing the console without exclusives XD

And yeah, the game is much more than one would guess from the simple, if beautiful, look. And it's nice how it rewards those who stay for the ride, that's what made me love it so much ^^

The Dark vs. Light is why I chose that scene, especially since light is on the losing side, engulfed by the pitch-black void, that let me play around with the darkness, and I gotta say, playing around with those dark tendrils/vines/tentacles sure was fun >3

Even among my beloved metroidvanias, it really stands out with how much content it has. For a game like that, I couldn't help but work extra hard on my entry ^^

I felt the same way working on my Castlevania tributes

You want to express more than words in detail on your artworks how much you love the game. :3

I can tell ^^

I may rarely comment, and it's even more rare to get me to write something more elaborate (mostly because I'm not that good with words in general >w<), but your Castlevania pics really showed your love for the series and devotion to your art ^^ (and this is coming from a fellow huge Castlevania fan)

Oho, so was SOTN your first game then? :3

And yeah, I am a huge Castlevania fan since the early 90s (had the first one on my NES ^^) and played most of the games, so yeah, I really need to do some arts cause my gallery is criminally lacking in Castlevania content |3

Yes. Yes it was. XD

I wasn't as fortunate as some guys like you to discover it's greatness back in the early 90's. (Mostly cause I didn't own a NES until 1994 and couldn't find a copy of the games back in the day before internet. XD)

But that'd be cool to see more Castlevania art in your style. VERY Cool

Well, I was lucky, I have relatives in Germany, where the Nintendo craze was pretty big at the time, and I got a NES around the time the SNES was out, so Nes games (especially used ones) were really cheap at the time >D

That's how I got my Castlevania 1 & 3 (never had Simon's Quest), and really loved the dark theme they had. My cousin got a SNES (because he was older, he got the better console) and didn't have as many games for it, but I remember playing Super Castlevania 4 on it. Plus, a friend of mine had a Mega Drive (basically how the Genesis was called in Europe) and he had Bloodlines. So yeah, I wasn't the only one to get into the game ^^

It became one of my fav series, so I tried playing any of the games that I could get my claws on, be it the good ones... or sometimes the bad ones |D I'm still bummed that my beloved amiga system got a really, REALLY crappy port of the first game >w<

As for Castlevania arts in my style, so far there's only Joachim lurking somewhere in my gallery, since I drew him for a GAHQ Castlevania project, but there will definitely be more to come and I hope they will be to your liking ^^

shinragod In reply to LukeTheRipper [2019-01-05 17:22:58 +0000 UTC]

Wow! I actually heard in Europe; NES wasn't that successful. Particularly compared to the Commodore 64. But maybe that's just from the UK side of things. Perhaps Germans took more of a shine to The Big N. ;D

And were you ever lucky to find those. Although NES was big in America; licensed schlock based on movies and TV shows seemed to dominate the aisles. The games we see old and used nowadays were always sold new; and my limited travel with my parents and limited allowance funds never had me finding to afford any titles.

The greatest title I had for NES during the 90's was Super Mario Bros. 3. And I was fortunate to get that bundle in the NES when I finally bought one at a garage sale.

So yeah I missed out on some of Castlevania's greatest titles back in the day: 1, 3, 4 and Bloodlines I didn't discover until much later after I experienced the amazement that was Symphony of the Night.

Amigas were never known to have strong ports of games. To think they ported Double Dragon to it. XD I mean wow....

I definitely would love to see more characters drawn from the series in your style. It just totally fits the series with your dark shadowy sillhouette drawings.

Actually, it's kinda backwards XD

The NES and SNES was "popular", it just wasn't available, Nintendo refused to release their hardware in almost all of Europe for some reason. UK had it, but C64 and Amiga were far more popular there, Germany and France on the other hand were crazy for Nintendo's stuff. So yeah, while I did get some crappy games for my NES as well, I was lucky enough to get some good stuff too ^^ including Castlevania, MegaMan, Final Fantasy and more ^^

Haha, and on the flipside SMB3 is one of the games I did not get as a kid, but that was partially because I wasn't that big a Mario fan, there were other platformers on the NES and otherwise that I loved way more (like Sonic or MegaMan).

And Amiga actually had a fair share of great ports (not to mention original titles and exclusives), many of which actually had to be done from scratch, but yeah, Castlevania was sadly one of the shittier ones.
