Description
Just a (quick) charcoal piece of my cousins, Huck and Shanti, for my aunt and uncle.Yes, I'm well aware that Huck is a golden retriever and Shanti is a Japanese chin. That doesn't stop them from being family, though. (That Shanti passed away a while back doesn't change his familial status, either, 'cuz he'll always be my cousin.)
Huck came out a lot darker than I originally intended, but I'm very pleased with a few bits. The crimped fur layered over his ear, for one. I spent a while looking at the photograph going, "Hunh... I have no idea how to do that.... Guess I'll just experiment." So I still have no idea how to draw crimpy fur... but I do know that it's not as hard as it looks.
No, there is no background, because then you wouldn't be able to pick out the dogs from it. ^-^
Download for fullsize view, though I'm not sure why you'd want to. Scanners eat charcoal for breakfast, I swear.
Original size is something like... 8 in. x 11 in. I cropped it a bit because it was just empty space or excess rug. Not terribly exciting, y'know?

I hate scanning charcoal, but I love working with it. If I ever find a scanner that doesn't hate charcoal, I'll be thrilled to the moon and back.
And thanks!

This looks beautiful, Luthrai. And I'm sure it looks even better in person, because charcoal and pencil are the mortal enemies of the scanner. As I know only too well...

Huck's acquired a few more lumps... Or rather, the lumps he's got have gotten a bit bigger. Still the same loveable golden, though.... albeit deaf. *sniffle* Poor old guy.

Goodness, your scanner really did eat that. Gah. This hardly does justice to the original. Oh, well.

Bravo! This is a wonderful sketch!
I love how lifelike they are. Your narrative was so sweat. I agree, dogs..or any pet for that matter, become family.

Thanks.
Yep, pets have always been part of the family for me, though I don't think I started considering my aunt's dogs to be my cousins until I was 12 or so. I'm not usually much of one for labels, but I'm glad I did come up with it in this case, since it helped me understand my relationship with them better. ^-^

Thanks. Of course, I spent an embarrassingly long time trying to figure out just how that whole "charcoal" thing is supposed to work again.

Awww, they're very cute. Of course pets are family!
Scanners eat charcoal and coloured pencils for breakfast. I feel the pain. D=

I think they like to eat coloured pencils more, though. Even though I swear I can hear my scanner fastening on a bib and chortling whenever I break out a charcoal piece to scan. ...In fact, my scanner is partially the reason I don't really use coloured pencils anymore.
I suppose that's why Photoshop was invented.

Yeah it probably is the reason. But for some reason it won't stop me sometimes. I either have a perverse desire to colour something and see if I can foil the scanner, or just because sometimes I really need to colour in real media...
But that is also why I think photoshop gets snazzier with more real media effects, for all of us poor saps who want to make it look real! XD

I hear you.
My major problem with photoshop has always been with how hard it is to get texture into a piece. Probably always will be, too. I mean, yeah, I can throw a filter on, but that's just not enough for me most of the time. That's why I keep trying Corel every so often. But that has it's own load of quirks to deal with.
*sigh* Maybe I should just give in and try a later edition of photoshop (since I use 5.5, now). >^.-.^<

I've tried painter as well, and it really confuses the heck out of me and so I give up like the pansy that I am...but yeah, before I got the later edition of PS (I used to have 5.0) the only way I could simulate texture was by using a small brush and scribbling...but that takes way too much time...and requires making the image huge.
Although truthfully, even with the multiple brush types I still sort of do the scribblies.
