For more Lil Formers head to www.LilFormers.comMy take on Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel.
Initial predictions:
-will probably make tons of money for both Marvel & Disney.
-Boom Studios will be losing all their Muppet, Pixar, and other Disney licenses once their current contract it up
-will it be good or bad for Marvel creatively? big question mark, though Disney has a pretty poor record creatively the in recent years. I don't read Marvel though these days anyways (despite being a Marvel zombie in my teens), so why should I care, heh.

Have you seen the craptastic crap Marvel has made BEFORE the buyout?
Iron Man: Armored Adventures?
That Nick Fury travesty, starring Hasselhof?
That awful Ang Lee Hulk Movie?
Daredevil?
And those are just some of the movie/tv properties!

Hulk was terrible. I got it as a free DVD with Serenity, and ended up giving it to Goodwill.
Daredevil i liked, once I got past Ben Afflick, didn't compare it to the comics.
The others I haven't seen. The Hoff play Nick Fury?

Now that's a scary thing to happen.
I'm only worried to see what's to happen to it creatively, as we've seen Disney do to other stuff it's bought. Who knows what's to happen?
And I must say, I like that stained paper effect. What's it called again?

I find it funny how a great majority of the people who have commented on this worry that Disney will kiddify Marvel.
Guys... Are we quick to forget that they have launched a Spider-Man and friends spin off for pre-schoolers? They have cute Marvel characters in toys for children. Then they have MARVEL BABIES. Yes, they have Baby Hulk, Baby Spider, Baby Wolverine etc. Then there was the Avengers spin off with the younger versions of the heroes made to appeal to younger audiences.
Then there are the drastic re-envisions of the Marvel Universe such as Marvel Zombies and Marvel Apes.
I think Disney will be smart enough to leave Marvel as is and just promote the characters in the same way that they promote the Star Wars franchise at the parks.
And yes, people are also not giving Disney enough credit. They have released the Pirates franchise which feature death, violence and grotesque imagery. And if something is too much for them to handle they give it to their other subsidiaries.
I think people are still shocked since no one expected Marvel to be bought out by Disney and the first thing people do is pull a Chicken Little and say the sky is falling.
I don't know how this will be a good thing for both companies. I think the wise thing would be to wait and see.

I am personally more concerned about what Disney will do with most of Marvels live action flims. I don't believe they will touch the comics. They will most likely produce several cartoons for Disney channel. Though I am afraid they will try to tone down the live action Marvel flims.

You don't miss a beat, do you, Matt?
That said, great art. I side with you on the whole "Boom losing their licenses" thing; either that or else Marvel will buy out Boom. Also, what do you think the chances are of Marvel setting up an imprint to publish Disney comics?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MattMoylan In reply to TomSwiftie [2009-09-01 23:41:45 +0000 UTC]
nah, no point in buyingBoom if all they have to do is wait for their contracts to expire (usually they are 3 years terms, I think that have been doing disney at least a year?)
And guaranteed Marvel will start a disney imprint. (though when you think about it, Marvel IS a disney imprint now)

Something like that, I think. Real shame: Roger Langridge is doing a fantastic job on The Muppet Show title!
Hmm, your point makes sense. And I'll be happy when Marvel starts a Disney imprint: just got ahold of a huge archive of old Mickey & Donald stories from back in the day, and they're fantastic all around!

Hmm the possibilities of crossovers suddenly fills my mind. However, I think and hope Disney will keep a hands off approach around Marvel. I mean, neccisarily I don't read Marvel comics (more of a manga reader), and seeing that Disney is getting back into 2D (horray!), I don't see much to complain about, so I'm just puzzled as to why people flame about Spiderman singing and Mickey Mouse in The Avengers. Who knows, maybe for once, the Marvel animated series will look good for once.

Yes. Disney is a powerhouse in and of itself. It does NOT need to go after other companies. Leave them alone! I dispise and hit my head at the Mickey Mouse Optimus and new upcoming Donald Duck Bumblebee. They're just wrong!

Hopefully, Disney will take a hands off approach and just let Marvel do their own thing. However, I am rather worried that they may impose some editorial control over Marvel, such as cancelling the whole Marvel Max line altogther.

Well Stan "THE MAN" Lee approves of the deal so I can't complain TOO much. All we can really do is hope for the best.
MY WISH LIST!
Disney doesn't hover over Marvel's shoulder and mess with the comics or movies. Instead they just let the comic boys do their thing and throw them money and movie stars when the ask for it.
Thus giving us a hopeful third season to The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Disney now sells Marvel merchandise at their theme parks. (Thus FINALLY giving me something worth buying)
Disney gets new kickass theme rides like "Spiderman's Webslinging Adventure" or have "Ghost Ridder" crash through the Haunted Mansion or get a super cool Silver Surfer ride next to space mountain.
Disney DOESN'T FORCE ANY CROSSOVERS! It was bad enough when Spiderman met Obama, we don't need the Jonas Brothers joining the fantastic four.

I totally agree with you here, man. Disney better just leave Marvel alone and let it do what it does best; making comics. Let's hope they don't buy out Hasbro, or that's the end of GI Joe and Transformers.

I doubt Disney will mess with much considering they want a bigger male audience.
The only thing I pretty much see is a new-line of cartoons/comics/etc aimed at younger age boys. Probably way of DC's Tiny Titans.
Hell, I would be pretty cool if they produced a live-action version of Spider-man Loves Mary Jane for tv. Something to replace Hannah Montana.

Got a bad feeling that guys like the Punisher and other Dark Vigilantes are not going to see light of day. From what I read Disney was pissed that they only hold onto the yth female market (Jonas Bros Hanna Montanna etc) and needed something to grab the yth male market thus why they got Marvel.
Disney has a bad way of making lots of stuff "family friendly" so I do see some drastic changes in the way of Marvel books in the near future. I also know that Disney does have lots of haters out there as well so I can also fprsee alot of these people dropping anything having to do with Marvel.
I myself am not a Disney fan and haven't been since Ducktails Darkwing Duck. I find their brand of entertainment bland and so frickin PC it goes right under my skin. I'll see how this goes for now but if dramatic changes do start to occur then I will romptly cut my Marvel ties.

Disney owns Touchstone, which does PG-13 and R-rated stuff. I don't see this as much of a problem, as long as Disney doesn't try to kiddy things down. Hell, even the Pirates of the Carribean movies were rather dark, and those weren't even Touchstone.
Worst case, Disney DOES kiddy down Marvel, they lose a bunch of customers, and eventually they drop the license. Five years, Marvel's back on it's own steam, back to normal.
Heck, having a different bunch in charge may even be GOOD for Marvel. Things have gotten rather stale in the past decade. A new perspective may be good for the stories.
