My take on Disney's recent acquisition of Marvel.

Initial predictions:
-will probably make tons of money for both Marvel & Disney.
-Boom Studios will be losing all their Muppet, Pixar, and other Disney licenses once their current contract it up
-will it be good or bad for Marvel creatively? big question mark, though Disney has a pretty poor record creatively the in recent years. I don't read Marvel though these days anyways (despite being a Marvel zombie in my teens), so why should I care, heh.

Yeah let's not forget that Disney owns the studio that made the over the top "nearly all of our budget went into buying fake blood" goodness of Kill Bill.

Well, I don't see Disney dropping Marvel ever. It's not a licensing deal, Disney now OWNS Marvel.

Well, maybe I chose the wrong words. They'd SELL Marvel if it stopped being profitable for them. Anyway, I don't think it'll be a huge thing to worry about. Disney has their share of "adult" stuff, and I think Marvel will remain relatively unchanged by this new acquisition.

I've heard about that. So does this mean that Mary-Jane Watson, Rogue, Susan Storm and She-Hulk are going to join the Disney Princess Gang?

Well considering Marvel characters are supposed to be turning up in Kingdom Hearts now, probably. XD

Well, that's going to be bad, now Storm will use her lightning and reduce Ariel to Fishsticks.

I don't mean to be pessimistic, but I have a really bad feeling about this! But will it affect Transformers in any way?

MattMoylan In reply to AleximusPrime [2009-09-01 17:35:37 +0000 UTC]

no, the only connection is Hasbro does marvel toys, including the Marvel Transformers. Hasbro also already does Disney toys, so I don't see the Hasbro/Marvel relationship changing.

Given how Joe Quesada's flushed Marvel straight down the toilet and still finds new lows to sink to, I doubt Disney can do any worse to the company. If anything, any interference from Disney might actually improve things at this rate. That said, I don't care about this merger in the least. Disney's buying a brand that's rendered itself worthless as a comic book company and has a mixed track record of movies at best. This isn't exactly a slam-dunk by any means.

I will say, though, that Mickey does make a good Galactus.

I'm with Coyote, if they're smart they'll keep Marvel in their portfolio and not intervene...they learned that with Pixar a few years ago.

One upside is maybe Disney can better bankroll film adaptations than what Marvel was able to do, didn't they have a lot of salary issues after Iron Man with Jackson and Howard?

Its a bummer about the Boom! Studios deal, the Incredibles comic is great fun. Hopefully the team on that book will be asked to stay on it if Marvel winds up publishing it.

As for Disney ruining Marvel, I don't think they will so long as they just help advertise and the like. Hell, Disney owns Miramax who have put out some of the most Un-Disney films I can think of (Clerks anyone?). Of course there is the fear that Disney could really fuck up the Publishing side of the Marvel U, but I see them pulling more of a Time-Warner and just going cartoon/movie financing/producing. Disney CAN produce great fun action films with questionabl content in them (Pirates of the Carribean) so I don't see them as likely to nerf the content of Marvel's film endeavours.

I think that they're smart enough not to do anything THIS stupid (points to picture above) unless committing suicide is coming up on their To-Do list. They have lots of advertising power, and being primarily an animation company we could expect to see more Marvel animated movies coming out, kind of like what DC has been doing the past few years, only with the power of Pixar behind them. Who knows, it might actually turn out to be a boon in disguise. The fact that Disney has several different labels under which they publish their films, we could see movie run the gamut from kid-friendly to ultra-violent.

They say Disney is gonna leave Marvel alone like they do Pixar and just reap the rewards of the profits... With comics I believe it but with movies/tv I doubt it.

I just can't see Disney putting out a truly good "adult" live action comic movie. Especially when I read that part of the deal is that Paramount still puts out IM2, Thor, Cap, and Avengers. Which means to me that the next set of movies will be toned down for kids. What's cool is Pixar may make a marvel character based movie!!! And we may get more Marvel character T.V. shows and Direct to DVD movies/Cartoons, although they may all be geared towards minors.... Only the future will show us the true outcome.

I could care less to be honest, lol. I love Marvel, but of late I haven't really read anything...mainly because nothing has caught my interest. I love Disney though but its kinda the same deal - none of their movies have been that great of late.

I'm more worried about the various movie deals...will Marvel still have creative control over the various movie franchises not controlled by Fox (X-Men, Fantastic Four, Silver Surfer, maybe Daredevil and Electra) or Sony (Spider-Man and Ghost Rider), or will Disney insist in having a voice in everything related to the Avengers-related projects?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

pap64 In reply to EchoWing [2009-09-02 05:24:01 +0000 UTC]

From what I read, Disney will NOT take control of Marvel until they are done with all of their deals. Meaning that even if Marvel is owned by Disney all current movie deals will go on until they are done. THEN Disney gets to call the shots.

EchoWing In reply to pap64 [2009-09-02 13:35:03 +0000 UTC]

Well, I don't think that the situation will be as bad as it was when M-Eisner was in charge at Disney. All he cared about was making money regardless of how poor-quality and rushed the product was. If they force all the heroes out of their spandex pajamas and into frilly princess gowns, there will be hell to pay. But some things at the big D never changed especially if you read about the scuffle that John Lasseter got into with the woman in charge at Disneytoon studios of the Tinkerbell movie.
