For more Lil Formers head to www.LilFormers.comThis'll get you guys talking!
To see the new look I'm referencing here, check out this preview on Comic Book Resources:
Transformers #1 Preview
Now, I'm not slamming Don Figueroa's art skills, he's still unquestionably the top Transformers penciller now or ever. But I think the choice of these hyper detailed faces is a big blunder. They're ugly, they're emotionless, they look like old men/skeletons. They have no personality... they're no longer characters I can get attached to or care about. Just big scary machines. Sure, perhaps the tradional smooth metal faces with eyes and mouths that some how magically flex might not make sense, but tht didn't matter. You could get expressions out of TF's with those faces, you could see characters with emotion in them.
Anyway, I actually have bigger complaint about this new look... what's up with the colouring!? I may have high standards as I work at a studio known for its high end colouring skills, but this is just god-awful stuff. Either the guy is on his first job, or was ultra-rushed and couldn't finish, or wasn't paid enough to do a decent job, or SOMEthing... but in my opinion as an editor this should never have seen print. Guh.
So anyway, all opinions welcome, what do you guys think of the new TF comic style??
PS: Yes, I am directly contradicting my robot reproduction statement from the Springer strip. But funny trumps consistency.

Ah boy, the faces that played a part in driving Don away from Transformers.
Even if the fandom can be harsh, I still think this whole "movie face" thing was a terrible idea.

(wow, this takes me back...)
Hmm, I don't agree at all that Figueroa is the best artist on the Transformers. Sometimes he can massively over-detail a piece to the degree you can't see where one bot ends and another starts. Hell, they barely stand out from the background sometimes, similar to how Alex Milne did. Personally, I think E.J. Su was a much better and cleaner artist, especially back in the Infiltration-Devastation era.
Then again I'm in a minority when it comes to art, since I despise the way Nick Roche made MTMTE look too.

I dont think it's Don's personal decision on the art style...I read something on tfwiki about how Hasbro has started meddling much more in the comics than they did at teh start of the IDW run. It's more of a 'make sure they look like the product on the shelf right now' mentality than the freedom they had at teh start...basically the same kind of screwed up crap Hasbro does every time this franchise really starts taking off, just like AHM.

Personally I find the new style very unappealing.I just recently clicked on that link you provided and I really don't care for it at all.I am sure that Don Figueroa is a talented illustrator,I just really don't like it and used to read Transformers comics when I was younger.

I might be wrong on this, but didn't a few of the old cartoon episodes use really odd facial models like that (Specifically the third season ones in the 80s, which were generally made like crap)?

Seems like we can't have it either way. If we want more detail, we get this or the Bayformers. If we want more simplified designs we get Animated.
*sigh*

you know , IDW have had the TF license for what, 5 years now? and they still haven't done a straight G1 project...

Airrider1 In reply to MattMoylan [2010-12-06 16:41:21 +0000 UTC]
You think they suppose a straight modern take on G1 is just boring or something? They could certainly do better than making Megatron the Big Blue Griffin Guy.

MattMoylan In reply to Airrider1 [2010-12-06 22:54:33 +0000 UTC]
Well, when Dreamwave did G1 it was the #1 comic in the industry for a full six issues. Nowadays, Transformers sits down at #150 or higher.

I dont/wont/havnt/can't read the comics....but I still think the people who do need love!
*sends love to comic readers* I'm new to the fandom-(fan cause of M.Bay) and the comics are a little hard to get my hands on as my mother wont let me buy them and I dont live in town hence no job- none of my own money.
I think the comic that I saw when clicky ing on the link looks like/reminds me of the war for cybertron style....Its like mushing G1 cartoon/the original comic/whatever.
With the bayformers very realistic and real world able style.not sure how I feel about it.
though I have done my best to read everything andwatch everything thing I can find about Gen 1.

If you like G1 and also War for Cybertron, you should try to find a copy of the original War Within story. It's basically where they got the idea for War for Cybertron.

In part I don't like them because... I never did! Though I understand the reason behind them: trying to make a robot face that's a bit more "believable". But the approach is not very appealing to me. The rest of the design is just fine with me, in case somebody thinks I am another elitist.

Ironhide died. im sad.
But Optimus still epic all the way
I don't really dislike the style. I think that bassicly the bad thing about their faces are their "teeth" and their eyes.
Even in movie style. the don't have that kind of noticeable teeth. and Ongoing eyes are ugly compared to the movie style ones

You know, I'm glad to hear someone else say what you said. I like the Transformers specifically because of the characters, and to see them pushed so far toward toaster-ville is a bit too much for me. I realize I'm one of those old-school why-isn't-everything-G1 people, but honestly, I've started to feel like these newer designs aren't even Transformers anymore.
Give me a toon-look-alike TF any day. I like the personal aspect to the show just as much as, if not more than, the tech aspect.
Funny pic, by the way. Good stuff, as usual.

I just finally read the first issue. I gotta say, the faces could probably still use some work, maybe a bit more of an armor-like face than a skeleton-like one for the Autobots, but, overall, I was still able to register emotions from them. For the coloring, I do agree it's a bit bright for the story, but there's the possibility of improvement (yes, I know it's the same in the 2nd issue; I didn't mean it would change immediately). As for the direction the story is going, I rather like it. So here's hoping things will get better.

I admit that I'm not too happy with the new style, but I think that once they find their grove with it and get some fan reactions then maybe things will improve. I don't think it's something we can't get used to.
And when you say we can't connect with characters with emotionless faces, what about Soundwave and Shockwave?

MattMoylan In reply to Schmedderling [2009-11-21 06:38:43 +0000 UTC]
those guys have simple faces, not creepy alien faces

Schmedderling In reply to MattMoylan [2009-11-22 02:31:07 +0000 UTC]
Agreed. But my point is, if people can sympathize with something without a face, even if the face is alien they probably will still be able to connect with it.
