Now, I'm not slamming Don Figueroa's art skills, he's still unquestionably the top Transformers penciller now or ever. But I think the choice of these hyper detailed faces is a big blunder. They're ugly, they're emotionless, they look like old men/skeletons. They have no personality... they're no longer characters I can get attached to or care about. Just big scary machines. Sure, perhaps the tradional smooth metal faces with eyes and mouths that some how magically flex might not make sense, but tht didn't matter. You could get expressions out of TF's with those faces, you could see characters with emotion in them.
Anyway, I actually have bigger complaint about this new look... what's up with the colouring!? I may have high standards as I work at a studio known for its high end colouring skills, but this is just god-awful stuff. Either the guy is on his first job, or was ultra-rushed and couldn't finish, or wasn't paid enough to do a decent job, or SOMEthing... but in my opinion as an editor this should never have seen print. Guh.
So anyway, all opinions welcome, what do you guys think of the new TF comic style??
PS: Yes, I am directly contradicting my robot reproduction statement from the Springer strip. But funny trumps consistency.

Combining the G1 look with the movie look doesn't work. I'm by no means a G1 only fan, but IDW's on-going series may be the first G1 related comic I skip.

Yeah, I don't really read the IDW comics anymore after they did the soft reset and forced the old story to closure, but I hope this style doesn't stick around. I love Nick Roche's art. He's got so much expression in his characters. The face is such an important factor in allowing the audience to relate to the characters it's pretty much crippled his art that Figueroa's doing it this way (perhaps he was asked to, I dunno). The movie designs work for the movie, but in comics, not so much.

It looks like the TF movie and a garbage can had sex and the result got aborted and put through a blender. Then it got thrown out and someone drew this crap on paper.
My lame attempt at humour aside this sucks what is up with the need for realistic looking Transformers...?

yeah definitely an attempt to shoe horn in a more Bay-verse style while keeping them (barely) recognisable as their G1 versions. Prime, Prowl, Ratchet and Bumblebee actually look pretty good, but hotrod is a monster.

I think the only problem I have with the style Don's using is that all the bots have the same face. In a style like this, it'd be really nice to see more unique faces that complimented the different bot body-types.
Other than that, I love Don's new style and I think it's nice to see that he's taking the risk to do something new.
I do think the colors could be a little more bold- but I'm no Espen myself

Probably trying to incorporate the ultra realistic look from the Michael Bay movies. I'll take the high road just this once and end my post there.

I like the new designs for art sake, the only thing I don't like are the mouths, just really weird looking. But I still like the IDW designs. I just feel Don's new designs give the series a more mature edge. Seeing how a majority of people who grew up with transformers are closer to my age. "20"

I'm with you, Like what Don's going with the only thing I say change is the mouths. Sure the movies sucked, but the first one had good designs. IMO

i dunno how much ill get bashed for this but im a fan of Pat Lee's pencils in IDW's G1 comics dont get me wrong i dig Figueroa's work as well, but something about Lee's handiwork just gets me.

It is ugly indeed. The best design of the Transformers so far I've seen after many years, incarnations and lots of trips to the toy store are the Henkei Transformers.

Gah... errr... eh... ah... GAH!
Well..., really, give the "movie look" to G1 character designs I believe it's a very baaad idea. All the magic that the originals designs had are lost in this too "machinized" look, the lost personality and "humanity" (yes, it's absurd to talk about humanity with alien robots, but that's part of nahive times (80's) that form the characters we know till now), that rest a lot the carisma each Transformer have (even Decepticons, and even with faceplates and googles, ja), and yes, de colors are poor, simple and too rushed, despite the excellent drawing. A crime being first issue.
At least the story (hope) would be a good one, but yet, they (IDW) are asking too much to the fans, risk too much "Bay-transforming" looks to G1. Bay-formers had their own comics for God's sake!!!

You do know Bay didn't design the movie robots right. The movie version is the work of Hasbro.

It's not magical, it's a flexible metallic skin. Like muscles in our faces, there are many little gears that form the skin into their many expressions.
