This'll get you guys talking!

To see the new look I'm referencing here, check out this preview on Comic Book Resources:

Transformers #1 Preview

Now, I'm not slamming Don Figueroa's art skills, he's still unquestionably the top Transformers penciller now or ever. But I think the choice of these hyper detailed faces is a big blunder. They're ugly, they're emotionless, they look like old men/skeletons. They have no personality... they're no longer characters I can get attached to or care about. Just big scary machines. Sure, perhaps the tradional smooth metal faces with eyes and mouths that some how magically flex might not make sense, but tht didn't matter. You could get expressions out of TF's with those faces, you could see characters with emotion in them.

Anyway, I actually have bigger complaint about this new look... what's up with the colouring!? I may have high standards as I work at a studio known for its high end colouring skills, but this is just god-awful stuff. Either the guy is on his first job, or was ultra-rushed and couldn't finish, or wasn't paid enough to do a decent job, or SOMEthing... but in my opinion as an editor this should never have seen print. Guh.

So anyway, all opinions welcome, what do you guys think of the new TF comic style??

PS: Yes, I am directly contradicting my robot reproduction statement from the Springer strip. But funny trumps consistency.

Serious. If they didn't already have a movie line okay, MAYBE they want to try this..but they do have movie comics, tons of them.

I think it does look cool, but their faces are so mechanical now it's causing a bit of disconnect between me and the characters. I mean heck, their overall designs are so different now I have a hard time identifying some of them with the characters I grew up on.

They should just let UDON do Transformers. I know you guys would do them right XD

rips the heart out of characters we love... they do look very scary... especially bumblebee... that was an unpleasant surprise... i'm sad that our favourite G1 characters' faces can't read properly... can't they just leave them be? TTnTT

Like it or loathe it, Transformers as a brand is about change.

And I happen to like it. If they look more like machines (... which they are), then they can have the limitations expected for machines.

Besides, we can't shoot this style out of the sky because we've only seen three pages of it in practise. I can be optimistic and hope it looks very dynamic, especially during Transformations.

well actualyl there's a whole first issue out. Don also did his last comic in a this style (in that one, Optimus takes his face plate off to have a drink, and he also has an old man skeleton underneath...eeep)

A whole issue huh? I'll pick it up.

I heard about that. Not like I'd go out of my way to read a stroy from the All Hail Megatron story arc... I've compiled a list of organs I'd rather remove first.

Oh, wow, old-man-skeleton!Optimus, indeed. I baww'd in fright for the longest time after seeing the horror under the mask in that issue. I guess some of the shock has worn itself out, because I didn't freak as much when I visited your link.

...I still don't like it, though. Talk about Resident Evil hybrid monsters. l8C

G1 + Bayformers = NO.

2 words: MOVIE! FRANCHISE! Because the movies are doing so well, (And 'cause ROTF just came out on DVD), they wanted to try to merge the 2 styles!

I like the art quite a bit, actually. While I think it'll take them some time to figure out how to have close-ups emote like they used to (the shots from farther back are fine), I do think that a fair bit of the blame could actually be laid on the colorist. I'd honestly like to take a shot on the line art of that, just to see if my theory (that the colors are a major factor in how the face ends up looking) holds up or not.

Japanese art groups?

icyhugs In reply to MelaniePerry [2009-11-10 04:06:11 +0000 UTC]

such as Sunrise who created Gundam since 70s and Gaogaigar and all the Braves series in the 90s

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MelaniePerry In reply to icyhugs [2009-11-10 14:25:03 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but why would you say those are the "rightful" art groups to make a TF comic? It's a Western series...especially in regards to the comics (oh, and the UK).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

icyhugs In reply to MelaniePerry [2009-11-10 15:18:09 +0000 UTC]

but the animation was made by Japanese art team and the toys also came from 70s Takara toylines. It was a deal between Hasbro and Takara, US gave the plot, Japan made the animation

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MelaniePerry In reply to icyhugs [2009-11-10 20:10:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but....it's kind of a given that animation is done overseas for just about ANY show. It's still done today. Character designs and scenery and plot and storyboarding and everything else was not though. Japan just made it move in a way that ranged from decent to abominable (haven't I had this whole conversation on deviantart before? I can't remember...). I mean...c'mon...are you saying we should give [link] to the Japanese too?

Japan has its fair share of TF manga too, but it's not very noteworthy, especially compared to the Marvel, Dreamwave, and IDW ones.

icyhugs In reply to MelaniePerry [2009-11-11 03:35:14 +0000 UTC]

Didn't they just made a new GI JOE animate or animate movie based on Japanese classic animate character design and art style? I mean the classic sci-fi ones, not the current hentai/yaoi/yuri influenced ones.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

SherbertTCat In reply to icyhugs [2010-09-01 23:39:29 +0000 UTC]

MelaniePerry In reply to icyhugs [2009-11-11 05:25:30 +0000 UTC]

Uhh...I don't understand the question...are you talking about Sigma 6 from a few years ago? I'm not so savvy with GI Joe info, so I can't say how much Japan had to do with that one besides animation. I'm not sure what that has to do with the discussion though.

Eh, but this thread is getting a bit long and I said what points I wanted to get across, so I'll leave it at that.
