To see the new look I'm referencing here, check out this preview on Comic Book Resources:
Transformers #1 Preview
Now, I'm not slamming Don Figueroa's art skills, he's still unquestionably the top Transformers penciller now or ever. But I think the choice of these hyper detailed faces is a big blunder. They're ugly, they're emotionless, they look like old men/skeletons. They have no personality... they're no longer characters I can get attached to or care about. Just big scary machines. Sure, perhaps the tradional smooth metal faces with eyes and mouths that some how magically flex might not make sense, but tht didn't matter. You could get expressions out of TF's with those faces, you could see characters with emotion in them.
Anyway, I actually have bigger complaint about this new look... what's up with the colouring!? I may have high standards as I work at a studio known for its high end colouring skills, but this is just god-awful stuff. Either the guy is on his first job, or was ultra-rushed and couldn't finish, or wasn't paid enough to do a decent job, or SOMEthing... but in my opinion as an editor this should never have seen print. Guh.
So anyway, all opinions welcome, what do you guys think of the new TF comic style??
PS: Yes, I am directly contradicting my robot reproduction statement from the Springer strip. But funny trumps consistency.

These are both cool guys, though they only worked for Dreamwave a bit at the end.

I agree, Joe's great but those faces are way too detailed. The dreamwave style fit perfect.

Why are the Japanese rightful? Dreamwave was an American company doing faux-anime.

I personally think that the Dreamwave comics had the greatest art and designs to grace G1.

Point. While I like the IDW redesigns, I quite like the Dreamwave style.

Something about the IDW art didn't sit with me right, particularly the early issues. But I suppose that it did get better with time. I just remember the faces being awful on the first couple of issues.

cos they created all the superheroic robots who are very human at the same time. The robot anime culture, history and tradition of Japanese animation are better soil for Transformers!

Erm, no.
The Japanese created the toys, which were originally piloted mecha. The robots being characters in their own right-that was done by Americans. So technically the "superheroic robots who are very human at the same time" are the creations of Americans.
"Better soil for Transformers"? Two words: Unicron Trilogy.

not really, the original tv series was created based on a toy line, when the japanese took the tf after the american headmasters they messed up the continuity, all the series they created afterward had that "a kid is in trouble, a kid crying gives me strength beyond logic" theme, the animation was great but the stories were plain annoying, so no, they're no better in japanese soil =/

but the UK/Marvel comics version of G1 just plain too brutal though I agree the POwermasters season has made Transfromers into Gaogaigar style too much, lol.

I actually mentioned that to my brother but he said they probably will just reissue them as they're doing now, he thinks it would disrespect the original illustrators, too bad though, Time Wars is plain awesome but the bots look like people in really bad costumes =/

Dreamwave went bankrupt. Anyway, as far as I know, most of the same artists that worked for Dreamwave work for IDW now. Slag, some of the people who work fored for Marvel work for IDW.

Yea, IDW made some good ones, but the new hyper realistic/movie influenced G1 version really isn't my cup of tea

I have to agree, this new style is bad - like Matt says, it looks skeletal and emotionless.
