Description Star Trek has a hit movie and Star Wars has a crappy TV show... has the world gone topsy turvy?!

My thoughts on the new Trek Movie - it was awesome. Exceeded all my expectations, a great movie. But there is also sadness, since this movie also burns 40+ years of Trek history that I love. YES, the movie gives fans the bone that it's an alternative timeline and not actually changing history, but that doesn't matter. The Classic Trek universe (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY) is dead. Paramount won't be going back to it. Imagine for all you comic fans, if they had cancelled the classic Marvel Universe when they came up with Ultimate Spider-man. Ultimate Spidey is great but...I grew up with classic Marvel U and I love it, even though lately it has gotten pretty sucky.

So while this is a great movie, I will still miss the real Star Trek. The movie's not without flaws of course... Nimoy felt to me to give the weakest performance of the cast, or of his career....Uhura was a totally useless character who added nothing to the movie...and overall it was all action with no real substance or meaning. But it was so good and so much fun I can look past the problems.

Go see it if you haven't!

Heh, I like this little comic. Simplistic but humorous.

I've seen the new movie and while it is a great film, I still felt a bit of remorse because the old Star Trek seems to be gone and replaced for something that's 'hip' and for people who have'nt touched the series before.

Star Trek just seems to be headed in the same direction as Star Wars though. It'll have one sequal to many and die most likely, because people milk things untill they're bone dry--and then continue to milk it. I'll just try to enjoy the new stuff while it's still good and has Sylar Spock in it.

I just saw the movie today and I have to say that it was well worth the $6.50 ticket price. I thought the overall story held pretty well next to previous Trek movies and I thought it was pretty cool when Scotti got introduced.

But I have to agree that Uhura was pretty useless and having her and Spock be an item was just stupid. The Romulans held up pretty well but the facial tattoos seemed way out of place. I think that most trek-heads are going to still stay true to the original continuity while this new movie and its continuity will most likely be held in the same regard as all the alternate-universe Gundam shows that come out on a regular basis.

And lastly, I rest easy knowing that Macross hasn't fallen into that redundant alt-universe fad just yet, unless you count Macross II, but that show bombed well enough that nobody really counts it.

About Uhura's character not contributing much...

...it's just in keeping with her original show character, ain't it? (joking)

Okay, so she was basically eye candy and Spock's love interest this time around. Hey, we were just getting to know the characters here. I'm sure the Sequal (or dare we hope, new series?) will further explore her character, if only in relation to Spock's.

Actually, Marvel DID do something like that. With their Brand New Day story arc, They erased the past 30 years of Spider-man's past. Everyone who ever knew his identity as Peter Parker has forgotten, and most importantly, his marriage to Mary Jane never happened. The only person who knows anything about it is Deadpool, and that's because he's insane.

It doesn't matter whether the new Abrams directed Star Trek replaces old Star Trek in Paramount's books or not. What really killed Star Trek was the Enterprise series.

But of course it didn't help that Voyager sucked so much arse in the end, and that the Insurrection and Nemesis movies were lacklustres before delivering the final nail to the coffin with Enterprise.

True it's sad to be leaving the old Star Trek, but it won't be forgotten, besides, I thought the storyline including it was pretty cool.

Pity about Uhura. I enjoyed feeling my jaw crash through the floor during her Spock scenes, but she wasn't really anything but the ship's 'Little Miss Fanservice'...

she was better than the green girl i havn't seen the trek episode where green women feature so i kinda ended up envisioning a slutty witch of the west xD
i liked how she snubbed Kirk all the time.. poor Kirk..

CrowleysPyramid In reply to HannahLovesVictor [2009-05-26 03:51:48 +0000 UTC]

THAT part I enjoyed: Kirk needs to cool his warp drives occasionally.

This whole Spockura insanity is actually pretty interesting it's it's supposedly 'correcting' canon to what it was supposed to be originally. I guess The Shat threw a fit until he got the kiss or something?

HannahLovesVictor In reply to CrowleysPyramid [2009-05-26 19:01:21 +0000 UTC]

spock in the trekisodes has had an interesting background though... he's at first like Data in the later episodes, devoid of emotion... then he gets a mating season where he can be a scary teenager in a giant pixies body... and then they play up his human side so he can smile and cry n stuff when he's pushed... and the film now says that all vulcans feel, they just squash it. early on in the Trekisodes Spock couldn't have had a relationship cause love was impossible.. so the best they could of done if they were hell bent on Spokura Uhura could have had a mad crush on him and then when they introduced the mating season he could have taken her up on her offer to HAVE HIS BAAAABIESS or something

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CrowleysPyramid In reply to HannahLovesVictor [2009-05-27 05:22:46 +0000 UTC]

I wouldn't change the original canon for anything, not even if it meant Simon Pegg snubbing his Scotty role, but yes I agree the relationship was pretty illogical back then (which is what makes it so weird now) but Spock's right brain grew exponentially as the series went on. By DS9 he'd garnered an almost Bones' level of passionate intensity and mirthful sarcasm, and Vulcan detachment was essentially ousted as a genetic imperative.
I'm DYING for Pon Farr!

HannahLovesVictor In reply to CrowleysPyramid [2009-05-27 08:29:34 +0000 UTC]

i don't think an audience can feel for a character with no emotion either. even Data begins to feel eventually through various methods. the new spock allows us to get attatched to him a lot more than we would have done if he had no emotions.
....Pon Farr.... THIS MUST BE WITNESSED

If it makes you feel any better they'll still continue with the original time-line in the upcoming Star Trek Online game. Hopefully any future TV shows will stick to it too.

But yeah the movie was so awesome. And HEY! Maybe since this is a new time-line now, Kirk won't get caught in that other-dimension like in Star Trek Generations.

Actually before seeing the movie my main hope was not that it was good, but only that it makes money so we end up witha new TV series (but definitely not set in the past like the movie... should definitely look forward and be in the future)

Yeah, I'm really hoping we can get away from "Star Trek: Enterprise" & back to it's roots. Like, for starters, instrumental theme music! Wow, that probably bugs me too much...it's just one of those unwritten rules that we don't even realize until it's broken! Damn Rod Stewart...

I saw the movie, and thought it was good with lots of action, but I felt that they made Kirk achieve too much so fast. I mean he's a cadet and all in a short time becomes a captain without going through the usual levels that the others went through.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

HannahLovesVictor In reply to srg1 [2009-05-25 13:28:39 +0000 UTC]

i think the fact Kirk did everything so fast was through connections.. he had a lot more help than other captains with Pike knowing his dad and therefore believing him to be 1st mate material to prove himself.. n then he met old spock and so aquired intelligence none of the other crew members could have known and theeen had every opportunity he could have had. it was therefore possible to achieve what he did and he was such a proud jackass he felt he HAD to achieve it ^_^

this all aside... spock was great
