Description
Star Trek has a hit movie and Star Wars has a crappy TV show... has the world gone topsy turvy?!My thoughts on the new Trek Movie - it was awesome. Exceeded all my expectations, a great movie. But there is also sadness, since this movie also burns 40+ years of Trek history that I love. YES, the movie gives fans the bone that it's an alternative timeline and not actually changing history, but that doesn't matter. The Classic Trek universe (TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY) is dead. Paramount won't be going back to it. Imagine for all you comic fans, if they had cancelled the classic Marvel Universe when they came up with Ultimate Spider-man. Ultimate Spidey is great but...I grew up with classic Marvel U and I love it, even though lately it has gotten pretty sucky.
So while this is a great movie, I will still miss the real Star Trek. The movie's not without flaws of course... Nimoy felt to me to give the weakest performance of the cast, or of his career....Uhura was a totally useless character who added nothing to the movie...and overall it was all action with no real substance or meaning. But it was so good and so much fun I can look past the problems.
Go see it if you haven't!

you're right, movie had it flaws, but i can look past it too. it made me love Trek again!
and yes, it did kinda destroy and recreate the series in one fell swoop, but i think it was needed for new Trekkie's to appreciate what the old Trekkie's valued.
i am looking forward to the sequal, and i'm hoping they'll do something about that whole Spock/Uhura mess.
that was totally out of left field!
and i didn't mind Nimoy's performance, but i get what you're saying.
and i thought the cast was amazing minus Uhura. hope they fix that.

As a junior Trekkie marrying a full-blown Trekkie, I think this movie was fantastic for two reasons: 1) It did right by all the Star Trek fanatics by creating an alternate universe to breathe new life into an old franchise without ruining what's already been established, and 2) It was a movie that had all the juicy tidbits to attract, interest, and spellbound those who aren't as knowledgeable about it. It also gave the newer generation of potential fans a gentler introduction of the series without starting with the old original series.
I agree about Uhara, she was basically nothing more than a sex symbol in this film, but since it's highly likely a second movie will be made, there's still a chance to rectify that. Plus, I didn't care for her rubbing up on Spock... Anyway, kudos to J.J. Abrams for making a memorable movie.

I agree with your comment on the movie completely. I am still confused as to why they don't have Christine Chapel (Dr. McCoys nurse from ST:TOS that loved Spock and was in almost as many episodes as some of the other characters who were put into the new movie). I thought if they were going to put a love interest into the movie, why not the blond nurse who was always after Spock? I am worried about the next movie with Uhura. I think that they are going to add some weird drama between her and Spock. Something like them always fighting... I just hope that they do fix it up and bring the character of Uhura back to the independent, intelligent woman that she was.

Wow, you sensed that too, huh? I had the feeling the moment I saw them making out in the transporter room. My female intuition whispered, "Oooooh no...there's gonna be some shit in the next movie between these two..." You do bring up a good point about the nurse, but my best explanation for it is the . Plus Abrams flat out said he wasn't a fan so he probably didn't know about Christine Chapel. Perhaps they'll introduce her in the next movie - it would seem the best time to do so and could provide the kind of drama they'd need to split Uhura and Spock up. As for the independent, intelligent woman part, I reeeeeeeeally hope they get back to that...>.<;;

I felt like they tried to make her independent and intelligent when she demands to be put on the enterprise, but they went with a more of a (excuse my lack of a better word) bitchy attitude. I am so glad I am not the only one who feels this way! Don't get me wrong, I loved the movie... but I loved the show more lol. The way they presented Spock is interesting. In the show Spock idolizes being a Vulcan and in the movie he idolizes being human... it is really weird because it makes Spock almost hard to insult. That was a big part of the show, McCoy and Spock's fights about being a Vulcan and Kirk always having some comment on Spock near the end about how he showed himself being human... How are they going to do that now if Spock embraces his human qualities?

An interesting topic indeed. This is confounded by the fact that in the alternate universe portrayed in the movie, Spock's mother died tragically right before his eyes. I guess the thing to keep in mind is that everything was altered greatly from Nero's appearance in their history. Perhaps it somehow changed things enough where instead of embracing his Vulcan side, Spock embraces his human side. Don't ask me how, but it's the only possible thing I can think of that could cause that kind of a shift.
Though it probably just wraps around to the fact that Abrams had a very shallow understanding of the movie and having a character embrace his human side seems a better way to sell Spock.

/fav's.
Yeah! So damn true!
There's still the upcoming Star Wars "Live TV series" though, but still...
PS: The poster for the SW side should be the poster for TCW. It's worse. Then again, EpI:TPM was ridiculous, too.

what? Star Wars has it's own series? Well, i've never watched any star wars movies, or watched any star trek episodes, i just went to see star trek--just to see what's all the hype about, with my cousins (i heard it was REALLY good), indeed, it was good. Jim Kirk is soooo cute!! i wonder what actor played him?
anyway, sorry for getting off track--this piece is really good and funny!

My thoughts exactly.
I loved the movie I really did. The whole alternate timeline and such.
But am sad about all of the shows. Because me being a Trekie!(parents are Trekers)I grew up watching the original, TNG, Deep Space Nine, Voyager and Enterprise(though Enterprise wasn't as good).
But we must trek on!

I drew a picture on a letter to a friend that has Uhura saying, "Oh Spock I love you so much" while Spock thinks, "I'm such a chick magnet." Animals of course, I don't do people!

Clone Wars crappy? Don't think so. Also Star Trek had a load of character development that's why it went slowly. It was good though.

Would it really matter if they did not go back to original timelines. Remember that all the Star Treks are still there and you can still read old comic books, why not make new things and journey towards the future, remembering that we don't have to forget the past.

actually I WOULD prefer to journey forward toward the future, but Trek seems to keep focusing only on the past (Enterprise series, classic Trek reboot movie...)

Their next movie should be a two hour version of the TOS episode Space Seed. Then they can do some other movie with a different plot, and eventually have a remake of Wrath of Khan.

You pretty much said it all... "alternate reality" was the perfect excuse, but I can't just let go of the old one. In my mind there are now two separate realities. The old one is still intact, only without good old Spock, who can't return there anymore... he was so old anyways... doesn't seem to make much of a difference.
Plus, I also agree: Mega action and little, if any, real content, but still a blast of fun!

dropped for being old xD i suppose they can always get a new vulcan in that reality.. though the new film hinted that being Vulcan was a state of mind.

I didn't think Nemoy gave a bad performance. He's been doing Spock so long he probably IS Spock at the dinner table. But the writing for his part was flawed and left me going 'what? That's it? What?' There were a couple of plot elements like that for the movie. Where it seemed like it was the only thing they could think of to do.
I've still got the heebie jeebies over young Spock making out. It's like they just justified every Mary Sue fic since the 70's.
