So, I put up my initial thoughts on the Stargate Universe premiere in my last journal post.

After having a few days to think I about it I've decided on the main reason that SGU's first episode left me not so blown away. It's basically that the threats on the previous series SG1 and Atlantis, and the scope of the universe have escalated so far that nothing seems impressing anymore. SG1 took us to dangerous new planets, neat! Atlantis took us to another galaxy with the possibility of no return, wow! Universe takes us to a farther away galaxy with the possibility of no return...mm, allrighty.

I'm also wondering who the villains will be on this series. SG1 had the Goa'uld and the Ori trying to enslave everyone. Atlantis had the Wraith trying to EAT everyone...will be tough for Universe to top that with something scarier. There's not really any sense of danger at all on the series so far. Sure they're on a decrepit ship with no air, billions of light years from home. Whatever, they'll fix it & get back. Even the cast don't seem too worried about it, heh.

I guess we'll see next episode.

They seem to have been trying to make Battlestar Galactica the reimagined series more than anything else. The space battles were the same shaky-cam zoom-fests, they removed all the sense of fun and adventure from Stargate(one of the main reasons I watch the shows), and replaced it with everyone always acting serious and depressing. It had a really good premise, seeing people who weren't the highly-trained soldiers of SG-1 or Atlantis confronting similar problems, discovering a really cool project from the Ancients, and...nothing. They just...didn't do much with it.

Universe was a BSG ripoff. I ignore it like I ignore every Digimon season after 4.

Wow! Teal'c said almost exactly what Dad said about Stargate: Universe, just under a cooking metaphor. And I love your chibi Teal'c.

I actually really enjoyed SGU... Dr. Rush is just awesome. The ONLY downside is most of the first season of SGU is very similar to the first season of SGA.

I watched SG1 and then watched SGU, and only recently sat down and watched SGA, and unfortunately almost the entire first season of SGA was so boring because so many of the problems they faced with Atlantis, was the same problems I already watched when they faced it aboard the Destiny...

Knowing this, I can see why SGU got such low ratings... and after Season 1, very few people gave SGU a shot for Season 2. I honestly believe if SGU had been made before SGA... it would have been SGA that got cancelled so early as it would have suffered the same draw back of having a similar Season 1 to it's predecessor.

I hear they're making a SG antlantis movie that I think comes out in 2013. Never really watched Antlantis, but once I get done with SG1, I'm going to have to find another Sci Fi show to be all obsessive about.

SG: U is so depressing & moody that you have to read Wolfgang Goethe to be cheered up. It's definitely derivative. I would add " Lost In Space ", " The Starlost* " ( *A failed show scripted by Harlan Ellison for Canadian TV about a giant space bound colony ship that lasted 1 season, at most.), " Space : 1999 ", & maybe " Star Blazers " to the mix.

soooo true... I started watching it, but stopped because, I didn't care about ANY characters (except MAYBE Eli, because he's comic-relief) and because they just changed it all to much for me.

SilvaraDragontear [2011-04-04 12:06:26 +0000 UTC]

Yep that is how they did it. SG Universe is so far from the two first shows as they can come without making a totally new show with no connections to SG. Frankly I was dissapointed, no diss on the actors in SG:U they are great but since it is in the Stargate franchise you expect a certain feel too the show that it lacks. No back with SG:1 and SG:A.

I really don't like SGU. Too much Battlestar Galactica-esque drama. Now, with that said, I frickin' loved BSG. But it doesn't quite cook up right in Stargate.

I'm a relatively new Stargate fan. I've mostly watched Stargate SG-1 and few episodes of Atlantis. However, I know enough to see that Stargate Universe is a terrible show in comparison to its predecessors, and it would really have to change for me to watch it again. The only character I enjoy on the show is Eli. The rest are either moderately interesting, boring, or completely horrendous. I hate Eli's love interest in the show. She's so off-putting that it's not even funny.

They barely have any scenery except the ship, which is frustrating. And that dark lighting is incredibly depressing. Every time they go outside of the ship or character dies, I want to say scream, "WOOHOO!" and do a celebratory dance.

I hope you don't mind my critique of the show. I love SG-1 a lot, but Stargate Universe is just horrible.

I watched a couple of the recent episodes. And have realized, it's like an old friend who has changed over the years. You still see glimpses of the great person they used to be and you wish they still were (cameos by Oneil, Carter & Jackson). But unfortunately they're not really your friend anymore...

It's so sad. I really wanted to be able to look forward to watching new episodes of Stargate, and now I can only watch the DVD's unless I'm willing to put up with a substandard spin-off. I watched the newest episodes first, so I already know a lot of the plot surprises. But at least I have Atlantis to look forward to. I haven't watched much of that, and what I have watched I didn't really understand.

And this still holds true today. It just seems that the stargate element is more just a plot device than anything central to the story though. It's like Startrek voyager, filmed with Battlestar Galactica style, and that's it.

It makes me sad to watch it.

Heh, love this strip.

-----------------
Easy ways to end SGU.

-Use contacts in Ori galaxy to send an Ori mothership after the Destiny.

-Send the vastly superior (it's later Ancient tech after all) flying city Atlantis after them.

-See if you can get any info from an ascended being.

Ways to actually figure out what direction the Destiny is in relation to our galaxy.

-Track the communication stones using fancy Ancient/Ori/Asgard technology.

-Hack the SG network to figure out how it connected to the Destiny (it just needed the power provided by the Icarus planet after all, the network knew where to go no matter where the Destiny happened to be, so it must be tracking its course, which they can't change) and follow.

Good ways to bring them back - i'm sure there are more if you really try it

But you don't need to try to find out the direction - they have a map of any galaxy they crossed - they should know where they are...

But why should they bring them back? They have just the oldest kind of ancient technology - they have much better stuff.
Let them be there and give them the feeling that you would try to bring them back and hope they give you good new informations about new other technologys

DavidRaid In reply to Schatten-Drache [2010-06-10 10:38:38 +0000 UTC]

True true, but I would think it'd be in their best interest to send more.. qualified people. There's no reason why it should have to be a mishmash of civilian and military people. Especially when the SGC KNOWS there has already been a mutiny. They're spending more time fighting amongst themselves then they are actually doing any good out there and finding technologies of use.

I also now, after finally finishing season 5 of Stargate Atlantis, why the hell Rush isn't wanting to send his swapped/host body over there to study the database for comparison or get info or anything really, I mean the resources there are surely far too huge not to even look at!

Atlantis feels neglected to me. It's on Earth for christ sake, I realize the SGU makers want to ground the series as much as possible, but give us some SG-fanlove already! Show the new fans the ancient City of Atlantis that just happens to be sitting on Earth, you've given us some Daniel Jackson!

This was a late reply, I apologise.

Schatten-Drache In reply to DavidRaid [2010-06-10 10:53:49 +0000 UTC]

They don't want to risk their "good" people?
Don't forget, they still can send the good people there without a risk of their lifes.

And yeah - they could sheck the database - but then they would say something like, it's to old and datas are not in this database or the database is to big (and the first option is actually plausible, they can't have datas about every single experiment they did - to many...)

And yeah - back to the roots - they tried it with atlantis, too - but then there was to much new stuff and they started to transfer people.

I miss the good old stargatedays where they just travelet to a random planet and made there something, nothing really importand, just be there.
Maybe it will come back - but i don't think so...

I miss those days too.

I just introduced a friend to Stargate with SG1, 'lent them the complete season 1 to 10 boxset and they've started to make their way through them, every few hours I recieve an SMS text message quoting the episode they're on or going 'Teal'c, no!' lol. It feels like I'm reliving it through them.
