This is a picture I started a long time ago...I've had the lineart sitting around for over a month and I never finished it...I was overwhelmed at the idea of coloring it...tonight since I had finished my homework I decided to force myself to color it....I'm fairly happy with it....but the green I was using to color the hill on which Mai is sitting dried up...so I had to cut the bottom part of it off...so the other coy fish isn't there.
SO, anybody who has seen the episode of Avatar called "The Beach" knows what this is about...not much is known about Mai's childhood except that she was alone and very repressed...which is why she's so quiet now...she was very lonely, I think...it's sad.
Mai doesn't belong to me...all Avatar Characters property of Nickelodeon...blah blah.

Beautiful picture. And you're right, her childhood was really hard and sa, but she had Zuko, Ty lee and Azula, at least.

Omg, she's so beautiful, and the mood is so sad and gloomy. The twilight makes her really beautiful. (I know I use that word a lot, but it's so fitting!) From the side she's very well drawn (didn't want to use the word beautiful again) and it gives me a lot of thoughts. I imagine that for once she got to go outside, and she's been playing with her dolls, imagening that she was one of them - the Mai doll - and then she's sad when she finds out she has to go home.
One of the dolls sort of reminds me of Ursa, so to me it seems as though Mai might have wanted to be part of Ursas family, maybe because she was nice to Zuko, and she wanted Ursa as a mother in a way. I think when you're a child, you can't comprehend the thoughts of "in law" so she'd just want Ursa as mother, and Zuko as her boyfriend thingy, but Zuko would still be Ursas child, but they wouldn't be brother or sister. I know I'm really getting out where nobody understands me, but basically, I think Mai would really like to be with Zuko and grow up with him with his family xD

Wow! What an amazing comment and you really did get the emotion I was getting at in this picture. I tried to give it the feel of an old Chinese painting...and the color, as you said, was a conscious choice to affect the mood.
I imagine she would want to grow up with Zuko as well. I was trying to convey loneliness in this picture. Mai must have spent a good deal of time by herself...but heaven knows being outside would get her clothes dirty and that would be bad for appearances...

I think she will get him back...I think she's going to turn on Azula...Azula has never been very nice to her and there have been subtle hints that Mai's not that loyal to Azula/she likes Zuko more.

Thank you! Mai has never been my favorite female character (Toph wins there). But Mai is an intriguing character...nobody really knows what she's thinking because she doesn't say anything. I think the only character that really knows her at all is Zuko.

I love her pose, and how small she is against the background. It really adds a feel to the weakness and isolation she feels. The dolls lend a similar feel.
The style is great, too. Very...Chinese-looking.

Hooray! You picked up on ALL the things I was using to portray her isolation/helplessness...(ie, the size of her house compared to her, the dolls, etc).
I was going for a chinese look for this pic as well...the pond needs work but I think this picture really looks better in person.

I've had the lineart done for MONTHS and I finally forced myself to take a few hours to color it.
Mai's profile pic is still in the works....I'm not entirely happy with it now.
