Description Check out the whole 3 sets on how to cell shade tutorial:

Part I | Part II | Part III

Other cell shading tutorial: [link]

Printable version Zip file download available

Disclaimer: I did this for my helpers to follow my style and do it with the most used lighting condition I handle for my manga. So it doesn't cover everything there is to be known in lighting, nor is it the most accurate. (in fact I just want believably to my eyes.)

Edit: added another section at the end.
Edit2: 1-wrong way to do it, I just simply didn't do it wrong enough. XD

This tutorial done for my E-Depth manga/anime project

My tumblr: [link]
My Studio tutorial blog: [link]

I noticed a lot of people can "cell shade" and there is a lot of cell shade tutorials!

But there's almost zero tutorial on various lighting direction and how it affects shape of the shadows. (and I thought photographs would help, but no.)

At least my style/anime is formulated enough, i can make a template set for people. (especially my helpers)

I'm doing a series of this...!

Nice tutorial but you should have made the correct/wrong ways to draw the light side by side instead of underneath each other. the way it is now you have to scroll up and down to see the difference between them and see what you are saying is wrong.

*checks ur gallery*
i don't think urs is any problem, its ok when most shapes are correct and you are just stylistically highlighting something.

Your tutorials on cell shading look like they will be handy reference. I tend to bounce back and forth of weather my coloring should be anime cell style or not since my drawing style seems to be between cartoonish and realism.

Thanks for writing this tutorial.

A lot of this I already knew, but sometimes light sources can be tricky, depending on the pose. This still might come in handy one day though. Thanks!

mayshing In reply to KunichiMinamino [2012-08-09 17:47:25 +0000 UTC]

light source does get tricky, its a science itself. Have to look at everything as not what they are but surfaces and items, to break it down to the most basic.

I studued it for a while and I still don't get the difference between right/wrong shading... But I guess it takes some time and practice.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayshing In reply to PatiLee [2012-08-09 17:24:08 +0000 UTC]

you need to know still life drawing in order to see "wrongs" in fact not all my cell shading is accurate either, just make it believable is enough. *actually all the wrongs are examples I copied off of other people's mistakes i might have not made it "wrong" enough. It's usually a lot of little "wrongs" that makes something not work.

WandaRocket [2012-08-09 07:41:46 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayshing In reply to WandaRocket [2012-08-09 16:55:32 +0000 UTC]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

WandaRocket In reply to mayshing [2012-08-09 17:34:07 +0000 UTC]

[link]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mayshing In reply to WandaRocket [2012-08-09 21:00:35 +0000 UTC]

WandaRocket In reply to mayshing [2012-08-10 01:18:00 +0000 UTC]
