Description Addendum: if you have Photoshop CS2 or later, you can do pretty much everything you see above without the use of Imageready. Just go to Window > Animation and you'll get the little animation timeline window thingy.

Also, if you want to upload animations on dA WITHOUT using a preview image, your animation MUST be 150x150 pixels or less. /end addendum

Since I've been getting asked a lot about how I animate my pixel arts, I figured I'd make a tutorial about how I do it. This tutorial only covers Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Imageready, but if you have any similar programs, you may be able to tweak this a bit to fit your program a little better.

I may end up making another animation tutorial later, using a freeware program since I realize that Adobe programs are not exactly cheap to acquire (unless you pirate it, which I really don't recommend doing). Anyway, have this for now.

Basic pixel art tutorial: (I may have to revise this later; it's a bit old)

Windows Movie Maker is a terrible program for making animated gifs. Try downloading a freeware program instead. I don't remember the name exactly; I think it was either MS GIF Animator or Microsoft GIF Animator. I'm afraid I can't look up the specifics since I'm out of town and away from my usual computer, and my wifi sucks... Anyway, I used that program to animate with when I wasn't able to use ImageReady, and it's fairly decent once you learn to use it properly. It's pretty easy to get the hang of, as well.

is there a free download of the program you used to animate anywhere?

Yes, but I think that would technically be pirating. After doing a bit of research, though, I found out that ImageReady has been discontinued since 2007. Whoops. o_o;

I think you may have to either pirate the software online, or see if you can get your hands on an old (legitimate) disc of Adobe Photoshop that predates CS2, because ImageReady was included with the Photoshop disc until that iteration.

Sorry if that wasn't much help; I was unaware that ImageReady had ceased to be a thing. It's a shame, too, because it's my favorite animation software for pixel art. ><;

darn cause my animator sucks! im stuck with the one that came with CS5 and it blurred the tail like horribly [link] do you know of any others that might be good or no?

medli20 In reply to InaliaFox [2012-06-26 05:35:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, that's actually not the CS5 program's fault. When any kind of raster-based software tries to rotate pixels that don't have anti-aliasing on them (in other words, lines drawn with the pencil tool), it will automatically blur the pixels to compensate for the rotation. If you want the lines to stay crisp, you're going to have to either draw the individual tail frames or find a vector-based animation program to use instead.

OH right, I had your note in another tab and I forgot to reply to it My point commission info can be found here, but they're closed at the moment: [link]

I don't have my info for cash commissions posted anywhere, but basically I charge $8 an hour. They're closed at the moment too, I'm afraid, because I've got a bit much on my plate at the moment

...I think I use the phrase "at the moment" too much, lol
