Description

I love the old 1980s cartoon series MASK (Mobile Armored Strike Kommand). If you never heard of them they are a highly trained international special mission team that wage war against their polar opposites VENOM (the Vicious Evil Network of Mayhem), an international terrorist group dedicated to wealth and power by force. Both teams use illusion as their ultimate weapons in their goals and each team possess ordinary vehicles that can become high tech war machines.

If GI Joe and Transformers had a child, MASK would be it.

Miles Mayhem is the founder and leader of the mercenary terrorist group VENOM. A former Major in the United States Air Force, Miles was chosen by the PNA (Peaceful Nations Alliance) to help develop MASK with the Trakker brothers.

Resentful of his status in the group as an advisor and craving the wealth and power he could gain using the MASK technology, Mile betrayed the group, wiped out the original team including it's leader Joseph Trakker during their desert trials and stole half the plans for the MASK vehicles and helmets.

Unknown to Miles he had only stolen half the plans and the others were in the possession of Andy Trakker, whom he left for dead in a burning building. Andy was rescued by his older brother Matt who survived the desert ambush and was given the rest of the plans shortly before Andy succumbed to his wounds and died.

Because of this Miles Mayhem ironically created his own worst enemy Matt Trakker to forever hunt him down and foil his plans.

Codenamed Wolf, Mayhem has proven to be a ruthless and cold-blooded genius often going to great lengths and formulating complex schemes to gain vast amounts of wealth to finance his team as well as anyone who hires them.

Besides his lust for power Mayhem is obsessed with destroying MASK and finishing the job he started years ago. Miles also wears a modified version of his USAF uniform complete with his medals and rank on most missions to signify his leadership position which he feels commands the respect of others.

Miles Mayhem pilots Switchblade, a heavily armed fast attack helicopter that transforms into a fighter jet which is radar invisible. Switchblade can hover in "silent mode" when in helicopter mode and unlike standard helicopters it doesn't need a tail rotor to stabilize its flight.

Miles most often wears Viper mask, which can shoot high-pressure streams of a corrosive and poisonous acid that can eat through most materials it touches including most metals fabrics and flesh. The time it takes to dissolve said material depends on the thickness and density of the material. Most metals take minutes to melt while more delicate things like standard clothing and human flesh take seconds to burn through.

The Acid itself is highly poisonous and can sicken or kill a human if a significant amount makes it's way into the victim's bloodstream unless they get immediate medical attention and a special antidote developed by MASK is injected into the victim.

Miles Mayhem has coated his uniform and vehicle with a solvent that renders the acid harmless to it. Viper Mask can also shoot streams of this special solvent out as well to turn the acid into a base. For instance, if the mask is used to burn into a bank vault, the solvent can be shot out to stop the acid from eating through the rest of the door and making it safe for others to pass through the hole to get at it's contents.
Miles' uniform, mask and Switchblade are made of or treated with that solvent or made from materials immune to the effects of the acid.

Like his counterpart in MASK, Miles wants to always be ready for whatever the team and more importantly he may encounter on his campaigns of terror. Miles wears the most masks of any member of the team, many developed for special missions or tasks. Miles is also pilot and/or co-pilot of Outlaw, Venom's Revenge, Buzzard, Wolfbeast and Ratfang.

How appropriate that he's YELLING. If Mike Ditka were a cartoon character, this would've been it.

He’s only in his early fifties but his hair and mustache being silver makes him look much older.

Besides read his bio, you can see the guy isn’t someone to be taken lightly just because of how old he looks.

I agree Mask was one of those 80's cartoons that was underrated years ago I had the MASK comic book from Marvel .

One thing I always thought how did the MASK agents keep there regular jobs just leaving off like that.?

You think after there battle with VENOM they would come back to pink slips. LOL

I love how Miles Mayhem mask would slide down as his copter changed into switchblade that was so BAD ASSED

The comic series in America was from Marvel Comics. It was one 4 issue limited series and one ongoing series that only last 8 issues. The comics failed because the writer refused to make the characters wear their helmets to protect their secret identities. If you read the letters pages of the US Comics fans constantly complained about it.

The United Kingdom MASK comics were much better in my opinion and they lasted from 1985 into the 1990s. You can probably find them on eBay. That's where I bought my set.

Most of the MASK agents were self employed except Hondo. I'm still not sure how he kept a teaching job running out of classes like that.

Every vehicle in the series seemed to have that little arm that would drop the mask down on the driver or passenger.

Well that enplanes a lot they would have to be self-employed .

How were the MASK comics in the UK different from the ones here?

MJMJR In reply to sean357 [2012-06-20 11:01:59 +0000 UTC]

The UK MASK Comics took things a bit more seriosuly for most of the run. Each comic is the size of a magazine and contains three stories plus some bonus stuff each issue like cut out masks, a board game and posters.

Most of the comics were black and white and all of the art was based on the toys and action figures and most of it was excellent.

The main problem with the UK Comics is they never introduced Gloria Baker or the Shark vehicle into the series. Also as the series progressed the stories got less serious and more silly.

Still they are worth getting if you have the spare cash for them.

I'm glad you like it, I put in a lot of research into writing it.

I think the MASK characters deserve to have Marvel Handbook style biographies because I love the characters so much.

I'm going to try and do one for each MASK character when I get the time.

I liked most of Mile's vehicles. I loved Switchblade and Outlaw.

Miles Mayhem reminds me of Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross from Hulk.

MJMJR In reply to Shadowhawk27 [2011-10-03 16:09:13 +0000 UTC]

Well they are pretty similar in a lot of ways. Both are/were officers in the air force, both are big burly guys with gray hair and mustaches and both are prone to fits of rage and like to yell at people in their command...

Still I think Mayhem has nicer wheels than Ross. Though Ross becoming the Red Hulk is probably the better deal.

Will MASK ever be released on DVD?

MJMJR In reply to brnleague99 [2010-11-24 12:10:22 +0000 UTC]

In the USA right now it's doubtful. There is a lot of confusion over who owns the video rights here so it may be years before they actually make a proper DVD set of them.

I had to buy mine from Australia. [link] They have the full series on DVD.

I have more MASK, GI Joe and Transformers art in my gallery if you're interested in checking it out.

It was an amazing cartoon in my opinion, I wish it would come out on DVD here in America. From what I understand there are MASK box sets in Austrailia, Germany and the UK. So you might be able to find one.

No problem! The cartoon never showed the origin it was only half shown in the original mini comics packed with the first series of toys and the other more graphic half of it was shown in the UK MASK comics. Why they never combined the two and showed them in the American comics I'll never know. Then again the American MASK comics were horrible and only lasted 8 issues.

They should bring that show back, they brought transformers back.

MJMJR In reply to pixilaira [2009-04-29 23:20:15 +0000 UTC]

I wish they would. Fox Family channel in the US started to show limited reruns of the cartoon but then they stopped for some reason. If Hasbro was smart they'd re-release all the classic MASK toys as an Anniversary Edition like they've been doing with GI Joe and Transformers.

Even if nobody reruns the cartoon, I still want a DVD set. They've been released in the UK, Germany and Australia but not here.

pixilaira In reply to MJMJR [2009-04-30 17:14:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but the new toys are cheap copies. I have some of the first ones. What do you think of the Live action version of 'The Transformers" movie?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MJMJR In reply to pixilaira [2009-05-01 00:25:49 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but with the TF toys they made all the metal parts into plastic, so yeah, they were cheaper, but considering none of the MASK toys have metal bodies I don't think they'd suffer from it. If anything they might be stronger considering toy plastic seems a lot more durable today.

I liked the movie version of Transformers, but I was disappointed Frank Welker wasn't used as Megatron.

The only thing that really sucks about the sequel to me is that the focus is going to be on Starscream, but Chris Latta is dead so his voice won't sound as cool. Still, I am excited to see what they do with this one.

I don't know why, but he reminds me of an older version of chief Irons from RE Maybe it's just that typical bad guy look.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MJMJR In reply to donatien1740 [2009-04-29 00:30:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah he does look like an older Chief Irons except Mayhem wasn't as depraved as Irons. Oh and you will love to know Miles has a twin brother Maximus who wears a monocle. Besides Vanessa Warfield Maxie is the only person Mayhem respects and listens to. He abuses the shit out of the rest of his team.
