I think I am going to make these for my theater makeup class when we do animalistic makeup. I was thinking about making myself look like a faun. C:

Just wanted to drop a comment and say that I found this tutorial very helpful and practical for a cosplay i'm working on! Not just for homestuck but any horns that need a lightweight material!Β
If you want to see what I did, I do have them posted on my own DA if you're interested.Β

This is great! I'm on skype with my best friend right now as she is making these. What kind of paint did you use for the final step?
π: 0 β©: 1
MonkeyNumber5 In reply to MikomiDarkLightning [2013-10-07 17:34:17 +0000 UTC]
Thank you! I used just normal water-based paint but you could use anything you want. I blended the colors myself and used three different tones (and three different layers) to create the last picture

Thanks so much for this! I wanted to make a pair of sheep's horns but this is by far the easiest and lightest version I've seen so far.

AnnaKitty [2013-10-03 17:01:50 +0000 UTC]
So you just cut a long strap and rolled it together tight before cutting it into those circles?
π: 0 β©: 1
MonkeyNumber5 In reply to AnnaKitty [2013-10-07 17:30:36 +0000 UTC]
No, first I roll the biggest circle from a 25cm long strap. Then I take the next strap and make it a bit shorter, like 20 cm. I roll that one, glue the end and put it inside the biggest circle to let it fit in. And so on and on till you reach the middle Β
I hope this was useful! I'll try to make the next tutorial a bit more clear about this part

Perhaps you could paper MÒché the outside to make it flatter, whilst keeping the segmented ridges. I'm about to start making these, so I'll link you some pictures in a few days once I've finished the horns.

Do you think I can change the design to do Karkat horns?
π: 0 β©: 1
MonkeyNumber5 In reply to Nyx413 [2013-09-30 17:53:35 +0000 UTC]
Of course! Just don't angle the horns too much. Β
You can also cover it with a thin layer of clay to make them smooth

ThisKitty In reply to ??? [2013-09-29 12:46:35 +0000 UTC]
This is such a smart way (and yet so simple and easy) to do horns. O_O Billion thanks for uploading. <3Β
I think im going to coat mine with ALOT of paint so there is no chance that the cardboard inside turns into weird brown mass - If they happen to get wet. :c

MonkeyNumber5 In reply to ThisKitty [2013-09-30 17:51:10 +0000 UTC]
You're welcome and a little advice: Paint in different thin layers. That way the paint won't make the cardboard smudgy because it dries too fast! And you can also decide with color you like the most. A little more white, yellow or red

so, thin cardboard is recommended?

MonkeyNumber5 In reply to megamasters11 [2013-09-28 12:41:04 +0000 UTC]
Jep! If it's too think you'll see the ridges and it will be difficult to shape

TokyoNoMegaplex In reply to ??? [2013-09-27 19:07:13 +0000 UTC]
Great tutorial! Though, I am confused on steps 1-3. You make circles out of cardboard, but how do you size them to fit perfectly into eachother?
π: 0 β©: 1
MonkeyNumber5 In reply to TokyoNoMegaplex [2013-09-27 19:53:53 +0000 UTC]
Well, at step 2 you can see that I made strips with different lengths.Β
First I make a little roll of cardboard. Then I wrap the next one around it, and the next one until I've got the right width as you can see at picture 3. And just for the show I made picture number 4 to let you see the difference from width.
I'm sorry my English is not to good. I hope that I gave the right answer

π: 0 β©: 1
MonkeyNumber5 In reply to GhostgothTiger [2013-09-27 13:32:08 +0000 UTC]
I just painted it, but you can use a coating to make it shiny
π: 0 β©: 1
GhostgothTiger In reply to MonkeyNumber5 [2013-09-27 15:04:56 +0000 UTC]
i was thinking just painting it would show rough edges and creases
π: 0 β©: 1
MonkeyNumber5 In reply to GhostgothTiger [2013-09-27 20:01:35 +0000 UTC]
That's the beauty of it! Because of the think line of glue you'll see the structure more
But if you don't want that, you can cover it up with a thin layer of clay to make it smoother. And with painting it you can also cover up a lot I painted mine three times!
