Description I'm undecided whether it's a coaster or a paperweight

This is the result of a lot of stubbornness.
An attempt at carving a knotwork pattern on a "slice" of oak (this wood was hard, argh...).
I made the pattern rather simple in the hope it won't be too difficult to carve. Single-line pattern btw.

This looks wonky, but heh, for a 1st time, and without the right tools, I'm happy (and stubborn).

I started with a simple cutter... didn't work well on oak. Then I found an old chisel among my father tools (at first it was as blunt as a screwdriver, I tried my best to sharpen it but I guess a woodworker would still have called that blunt) and that was a bit better. I used a dremel-like rotary tool to try deepen the part between the lines, as the chisel was too wide for that.

Not a single finger was cut, that too makes me happy

---
Now, maybe I should think of finding some proper tools, or even better, a training workshop somewhere...

Nice done! Oakwood is fine to carve but maybe it's s too hard for a beginner. For next carvings you'd try to use softer woods as beech, plum or basswood.

Thanks for the comment
I used wood from my garden - and I'm mostly surrounded by oaks . Well, there's a beech tree too, but at that moment, its branches didn't need to be cut. ^^

I like it. Looks a wee bit primitive, that just adds to it's charm.

Carving that into the end grain of oak must have been miserable! Beautiful work.

Yes, that was rather difficult, but I didn't know that working into the end grain was supposed to be difficult compared to working with the grain, so I carried on
Thanks a lot for your comment.

Read this if you want to learn not only about sharpening but some intricate details about how the edge of a blade slices through woodgrains. Probably TOO much information but it is a professionals pocketbook no doubt.

My favorite sharpening tool is Spyderco's Triangle Sharpmaker. It turns sharpening a knife into a simple task. It's also capable of sharpening most every other tool on your workbench. Combined with the knowledge in the above book you'll have an arsenal of nice wood working tools in no time. [link]

Abraham Lincoln is attributed as saying, "If I had 4 hours to cut down a tree I'd spend the first 3 hours sharpening the ax."

I had been meaning to do something like this for a while with a piece of mahogany. Even going with the grain I'd expect it to be tough. Sounds like the situation is similar as well; my dad whittles and while I have not carried on that tradition, I do appreciate a sharp tool and quality woodworking.

Thank you very much for the input, I'll try to look at these!
What I did at the time was to use what I had at hand, that is: a bench grinder, and a sharpening stone. I previously looked at some videos about sharpening on youtube. (On one, the presenter explained that a really sharp chisel could shave hair from one's hand/arm. Well... I only managed to make a red mark on my arm )

Yes, oak is called a "hardwood" tree for a reason.

Glad you didn't cut yourself.

It doesn't look bad. Certainly is better than what would turn out if I had tried to do that. On those very few wood projects I've had it has often proved more efficacious to use a variety of grades of sandpaper rather than an edged tool.

I knew that oak would be hard, but I must admit I didn't expected to be that hard.

Hehe, thanks Stubborness and ignorance, because I had no idea how to carve wood when I started ^^

Lovely, and well worth the stubbornness! I particularly like the effect of the concentric growth rings on the looping knotwork.

Lovely!! That must have been really tough to do. Are you going to use it for block printing?

mossy-tree In reply to Squeak-Plomeek [2010-08-05 19:56:49 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
Well, no block printing with this thing, I prefer to keep it as is. I think I would use a much softer material for block print, that one required too much effort
