Description I've decided to make myself a new leather bodice for next year's Renaissance Festival. I've adapted a desing from one of my paintings into this pattern.
Tooled and dyed veg-tan leather. 6oz or so, I THINK. This is just the front/front side. I've attached the grommets for lacing and I've got half of the right side punched for a stair-step leather lacing applique. Gotta go whack out the other half and make the back left and right. This is a lot of work, but it should be worth it!

It already looks like a stunning piece even in such an unfinished state, the pattern is just beautiful, I can't wait to see the outcome. and on another note isn't the most difficult of task that we overcome always the most rewarding if life was easy we'd all get bored

Out of curiosity I added up the material costs and time to do one of these (this is for the full one I'm making myself, tooled on the front and hips, also tooled on both sides of the back, dyed and painted, decorative lacing and grommeting.

I must love myself a LOT because it's costing me about $220 to make this. That's in just materials and conservative time estimate without any profit marked in, just what it's costing me to make it. I'd have to charge something like $500 or so to sell one, IF someone could talk me into it. My poor hands ache so bad from poking more holes last night! So I'm pretty surprised at that. I CAN think of some alternatives to cut back on things, but not sure if I'd be willing to do the cutbacks, or even if it'd work well.

I can currently also only make them in my size which fits a busty L to XXL, since I'm not working off of a sized pattern or anything.

I'm not seeing myself taking commissions any time soon on this stuff, not until I can find a better way to get the pieces cut out and dyed. Getting the dyes to take evenly is taking FAR too much of my time right now, and every time I cut a piece out I'm afraid I'll cut off a thumb!

That cost also doesn't include further future features such as tooled shoulder straps with leather draping and 4-panel protective skirting, which YES, I plan on adding on to this. (plus matching collar, hairpiece and bracers, a matching pouch, possibly a drinking flask, and, If I can find someone to cut me a plywood base, a matching Targe (flat round shield) It's my BIG project for the year. A full Dragon/Rose Armor Set. *big grin* Lets see how far I get.

I may have to learn silk-painting in order to make a matching flag as well.

Hmmm...Any ideas on how I can tarnish up the nickle plating on the gromets and make it not so shiny????

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Crickitt In reply to MPFitzpatrick [2007-01-07 03:20:05 +0000 UTC]

Lovely piece
You might try scuffing the nickel with sandpaper and / or a drimmel, then dab with pigment ink or colored wax. Hope this helps!

Thanks!!

I keep meaning to comment over on your gallery. I'm a fan from a long time back, first saw your work in the Centaur's Gatherum, and have struggled to locate issues of Desert Peach and Stinz ever since. I absolutely treasure my copy of The "Ninjery" and show your story in it to everyone I meet (ok, so most people I meet really like Ninjas what can I say?)

Worth it is right! Geez, I'm envious of your talent. Not only can you design, but you can carry it out. Are you sure there aren't two of you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MPFitzpatrick In reply to Qwonk [2007-01-07 02:14:31 +0000 UTC]

If there were two of me, I could have the other one run out to the leather store and pick up the gromets I need for the back pieces. I didn't get enough on my trip out there today.

Not to mention one to make dinner and the other to get the leather cut for the back. I'm kinda hungry.

I'm chomping at the bit because I got the lacework done on the front and it's wonderful! My first leather lacing applique work (and the simplest you can do) and I LOVE it!! I've even altered the back to put some in there too.

By the way, I'm tooling the back too because the boyfriend says he's sick of never seeing anyone tool the BACK of bodices. And he's kind of right. It's going to look cool as hell back there.

Uhm..easily distracted here... I'm chomping at the bit because I finished the front and the light is all gone and the camera battery is dead, so I can't uploade a new pcture yet.
