Description
Another belt-pouch, this one with a tribal-looking dragon design. Hand-tooled and dyed Vegetable-tanned leather, this was probably around 5oz, a little too thick for my tastes, The gusset is a nice Ultra-blue colored suede. Jeweled Celtic cross concho and deerskin laceing closure. Belt loops riveted to the back, and all hand-stitched. I really like this new style on the belt loops, and will probably be sticking with that style.Related content

Everything on my pages was made by myself. I used to have a few making-of posts about my leatherwork, but I took those down a while back since they were a bit old and my pages needed a little tidying.
FYI, DeviantArt does not allow reposting of others' work to the Deviant galleries, so anything you see should, in theory, have been made by the Deviant whose gallery it is.

excellent work! nice colors, and the blue is beautiful! i'm used to working with thick leathers (it's all i've tried), mostly 12-14oz veg-tanned. i need to buy a half hide of 5-6oz to try it out. i could make less bulky things (but not armor-grade, of course), and that's what i'm looking into now. found a great place on eBay selling 5-6oz half-hides for $65 + $15 S&H. i'll buy one if i sell my current bracers. sorry, rambling again.

I know an extremely gifted artist who started doing leather masks. She did so well with sales that soon, alas, her "traditional" art fell by the wayside, and now, all she does is work with the leather, creating masks, masks, and more masks.
And they are beautiful.
Here's Cheryl's link in case you might want to take a gander: Angel Mask .

Actually, I used to visit her site years ago, and then found it again when my interest in masks resurfaced. I wondered why she didn't have any of her flat art up. It's a shame she doesn't have time for both. Though I can understand how it happens. You sit down to draw and end up sketching out several leatherwork designs - and then since you HAVE them you might as well make them...
I spent some time this weekend sketching, though. Gotta keep my hand in! Trying to figure out which of my lists of painting ideas I need to work on next. There is one I really do want to do, but can't seem to get it going properly yet.

I think with Cheryl it was pure economics. While her art has always sold well, when she started doing the masks, the demand far outweighed the supply, and so she started spending most of her time doing the leatherwork.
Ya gotta go with the bread and butter. What sells, quite simply, sells. She found her nitch, and made it into an alcove!

I'm currently gearing up for a convention art show where I'll display my leatherwork. This is one for that. The convention is in Dallas in September. After that, (or more accurately, after I've got enough stock for that, I'd be more than happy to take on orders. I'm still working out time and materials on these, so I'm not certain on cost just yet. Problem is, right now each one is an original with time that goes into devising the pouch style and graphics, as well as creation of the item, once I start making duplicates, I'll be more able to understand the real time and costs involved. Want me to note you when I've got myself together on these?

Oh yes, most definately! I love Dragons and Mushrooms, so anything you come up with along those lines would be of interest, but I would definately be interested in the dragon pouch. Good luck with the convention, look forward to hearing from you

it's a tough call, but i think dragon trumps horse i like the shield shape. it's very dramatic. i'd love to see a more nature inspired one of these, like a greenman type deal. (of course, since my favorite-not terribly accurate- garb is brown and green i'm totally biased there!)

Damn you're good at these things, I'd have killed for something like this when I was younger,(I've mellowed a bit) 'dragons' and 'blue' too. Beautiful work. How long did it take to make?

MPFitzpatrick In reply to wendyf [2006-05-16 19:04:29 +0000 UTC]
The stitching took about 2 hours or 3. I sat in front of the TV for two nights stitching. Thing is, I stitch with it clamped between my knees, so I'm also getting some thigh-master-type benefit everytime I stitch. High-endurance thigh workout.
Tooling, I'm not sure. I get totally lost in that and hours can pass that I don't realize.I tend to do the cutting one night when I'm busy with other stuff and don't have a lot of time to apply to it. I'll do that part just before bed for no more than about 45 min or so and get it all cut in. And then I tend to tool everything in another evening. Then I'll do the dying and coloring the next night once it's all dried. Then stitching the next couple of nights.
Now, designing the dragons and the pouch for everything to go together and look good. THAT takes a while, and a lot of computer work to stick something here, something there. Duplicate that , flip this around. Start all over... that kind of thing can take days to get right. This dragon, however, I converted from my Heart's Wings painting. I realized that he'd kick some serious butt if I took the bird out and made him a single figure.
I have, however just finished a Heat's Wings tankard, but the photos I've taken stink so far and I need to take better ones to post.
I babble.

wendyf In reply to MPFitzpatrick [2006-05-17 06:18:18 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the info Michelle, seriously the babbling is the most important part, it's where the thinking happens!!! There aren't any short cuts are there!
The stitching would be too much for me I'm afraid, my hubby does the stiching on his horse gear, harness and stuff, I can't do it on the heavy leather and cutting the stuff is way hard for me no matter how sharp the cutters are. I have to help sometimes just to keep the edges straight when cutting long pieces.
Now I ramble a bit

This is one of a bunch of leather pieces I'm making to display in the FenCon Art Show in Dallas in September. I'll be making a bunch of pouches and tankards and some other stuff. I really need to send in my table fees, though. I'm interested to see how they go over.
I guess after that I'll see how much effort I should put in selling them, or if I should just make stuff for fun. At the moment, these are more fun to take off the pressure to do my other artwork. If I'm shifting back and forth between types of art I feel better about all of them.

Thats amazing.
I love the crafts(wo)manship
Being in Australia and working on the metric system can you please explain the 5oz reference. I assume it refers to thickness. Standard belting hides are around 3.2mm thick.
cheers!

MPFitzpatrick In reply to notsomighty [2006-05-12 13:54:28 +0000 UTC]
Wow, people actually read the descriptions?!
I measured it in response to your question in order to figure out the millimeters and such, and it turns out it was closer to just over 8oz, which is about 1/8" and 3.2mm. Really thick stuff for whast I was doing. I MUCH prefer 4 oz/ 1/16"/1.6 mm for stuff like this, but with a slightly thicker chrome-tanned (soft) leather for the gusset.

That is just one amazing piece of craftsmanship. The embossed designs are already so beautiful, but the way you shaped the leather to follow the design and the combination of the two different colored leather types just steal the show. Wonderful work!
