Description My newest! I'm not quite done, as I haven't sealed the inside yet to make it hold liquid. That's this weekend.

Hand-tooled and sewn leather tankard with an antique mahogony stain.

The picture shows it from all angles.

Edited to mention that I love my boyfriend very much, but he can be kind of strange sometimes. I showed him the pic of the
tankard, and he went nuts. LOVED it. The pictuere, that is. He was more impressed with the background and how I had the piece showing all angles than he was with the tankard itself. Go figure.

Just wanted to comment and say that I LOVE this tankard and have been using it at Faires every chance I get!
-Also, I get a nice little deal on drinks at Faire if I use the tankard instead of their plastic cups!*laughing* It's great and it holds so much liquid and I keep getting compliments on it. Truly a great job on this tankard!

So, you get a discount, it holds MORE, AND you get to save the environment from more plastic and styrofoam cups. What a deal!

I'm glad it's getting well used.

I just made up another for myself for this weekend's faire trip (going out to TRF in my full DragonRose outfit plus one of the pairs of amazing pants that I bought and never get to wear Oh, yes, there WILL be pictures!! OH YES!!.) I realized that the other tankard I had clashed horribly, and I had a bit of leather pre-tooled and painted that I hadn't put together yet. Oh, I'll just stitch it up...

UGH! Now I remember why I don't make these often! My poor fingers hurt so bad that when I washed them after stitching it STUNG. OUCH!

But I like the all-over resin finish that you asked for on this so much that I'm doing all my tankards like that. It looks so good and lick-it yummy. So my new one has the same treatment as yours and I can't wait to use it tomorrow!

Well, I discovered that apparently not ALL Faires will give a discount just 'cause you're using a tankard...but on the upside, I'm still getting ALOT more liquid in my tankard while still paying for a normal sized cup. It's a great benefit, plus like you said, saves on plastic.

I hope you post photos of your own new tankard, I would LOVE to see what you've done with this one!
-Sorry about your fingers hurting, I hope they feel better soon. I hope you find that it was worth it though!

Yeah, the shiny resin looks great and I think it preserves the leather better, too. Hope you had a great time!

This is a gorgeous piece! Reminds of the ones I've seen at the Ohio and Ga. Ren. Faires!
-But better, and I'm not kidding!;D

I love the bottom part of the handle, how it curls like that.

If you were to take on a commission for one of these tankards, how much would you charge? Also, how tall does this tankard stand?

*drool* I want to get me a tankard or flagon or some such. How much do you think you'd charge for such a thing if requested, or wouldn't you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MPFitzpatrick In reply to gnomeofmaille [2006-08-14 20:40:54 +0000 UTC]

I won't be taking commissions on anything leather until after September.
The amount I'd charge would depend on how diffucult/time consuming the design is to tool/dye/paint.

I'll have a better idea on pricing after September (I'm doing my first convention art show with my leatherwork. Done lots of shows, but never shown the leather before! )

It's gorgeous! I'm amazed at the graceful curve of the handle - and made from leather no less!

MPFitzpatrick In reply to Ellygator [2006-04-11 13:20:24 +0000 UTC]

That handle was such a pain, and had to be done while the leather was wet. I'm getting used to the smell of dry leather everywhere, but wet leather smells a bit like fish...ick.

That's leather?! O.O I could have sworn it was pottery or even wood... ">.> Either way, the design is very beautiful; I know a friend who would love this, since he's very into Celtic designs and things. (He's pretty good with designing the Celtic knots himself...)

Bravo!

But not to forget the work! I'd love to have one of these, it looks very rustic, and the design is quite beautiful. Truly a work of art.

I'm very impressed.

I have a collection of celtic tankards, and I would love to have a piece like this.

Do you sell your work? And if not, I highly suggest you do. Take your work to a local Renaissance Faire, it'll sell like hotcakes and they're tons of fun.

I'm not strong enought to do leather. You must have finger muscles the size of your biceps to push through that. Or a really good awl...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MPFitzpatrick In reply to brotherpanda [2006-04-07 18:36:55 +0000 UTC]

I'm a weakling. I've got a kickin' awl that I love dearly. Though, when I worked on twisted wirework or chainmaile (it's been a couple of years since I played with that) I tended to worry that I would end up with Popeye arms.

I DO have this nasty-looking thing on my thumb I got from making this. I had a callus for a week and now it's flaked and falling off. It looks like I busted a blister the size of my thumnail. And my fingers hurt for a couple of days after sewing this.

brotherpanda In reply to MPFitzpatrick [2006-04-08 06:07:21 +0000 UTC]

I haven't gotten calloused hands in a while... But I did work on this [link] for 50 something hrs. Couldn't feel my fingertips for almost a week after all that crocheting.

That is so cool! I love the unicorn design, very elegant and Celtic. It's a beautifully crafted tankard, and i'm quite sure lots of people would rush to buy one, myself included if I could actually afford anything. How do you water-proof it so it doesn't leak? How did you get into making leather things?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MPFitzpatrick In reply to carolin54323 [2006-04-07 16:37:33 +0000 UTC]

It's coated on the inside with a 2 part epoxy but the outside is coated in wax finishes. I still need to add a couple more layers, actually.
